Raymond Edward Dorset (born 21 March 1946) is an English guitarist, singer, songwriter, and the founder of Mungo Jerry. "You Don't Have to Be in the Army to Fight in the War," "Baby Spring," "Lady Rose," "You Don't Have to Be in the Army to Fight in the War," "Long Legged Woman Dressed in Black," "Because of Love," plus "Materick Love," a number one hit single for Scottish disco singer Kelly Marie.
Early life
After passing an examination, Dorset attended Stanwell Road School (which was renamed Abbotsford County Secondary School) and then Southall Grammar School from the age of 13. As a youth, he formed the Blue Moon Skiffle Group.
After graduating from the school without having obtained a diploma, he worked as an apprentice hairdresser for nine months. He then studied for a City and Guilds degree at Twickenham College of Technology and worked with Radio Control Specialists Ltd, National Works, Bath Road, Hounslow, a company that manufactured Radio Control equipment for models and film jobs, as well as electromechanical components.
Personal life

Music career
Dorset formed Good Earth in 1968, which featured Colin Earl on keyboards, Dave Hutchins on bass, and Ray Bowerman on drums. They released It's Hard Rock And All That on the Saga record label before Hutchins and Bowerman left. Joe Rush joined the washboard and the group opted for a more acoustic-based skiffle style.
Mungo Jerry became Mungo Jerry in 1970, with new product lines included such as "In the Summertime." When he was away from work and working in a laboratory for Timex, Dorset took only ten minutes to compose on a secondhand Fender Stratocaster.
Dorset has also pursued a solo career parallel to Mungo Jerry's reign. He released the album Cold Blue Excursion in 1972, featuring strings and brass accompaniment. He appeared on one-off blues band Katmandu with Peter Green and Vincent Crane, who later released an album titled A Case for the Blues. He recorded and released the theme tune for the TV drama series Prospects in 1986, which was then released as a single.
"Feels Like I'm in Love," was originally written by Dorset for Elvis Presley, who died before the song could be released. Nonetheless, it was recorded by Scottish disco singer Kelly Marie in 1979 and became a UK Number one in September 1980. Dorset was one of the first songwriters to top the UK Singles Chart with songs performed by himself and another artist.
