A Sing Sing Correctional Facility security guard was arrested 26 years after his ex-wife was strangled to death with a t-shirt in her apartment. Rafael Ramos, a 54-year-old former corrections officer, was charged with strangulation death in his ex-wife, Nusinaida Ramos, 34, who was discovered dead in her Colin Street apartment in Yonkers on March 9, 1997. Ramos was a prime suspect in the trial in the early 2000s, but prosecutors were reluctant to proceed without a confession. After her relatives begged cops to conduct a welfare check, the unemployed immigrant from the Dominican Republic, who shared two children with Ramos, was discovered. Her apartment was found in disarray, with several of her fingernails near her body. The mother of Nusinaida was in jail for the arrest but did not speak to reporters. However, the assaultee's sister-in-law, Eva Beauchamp and husband, Freddy, told The Journal News that the detention has'been a long time coming.' I thought I was going to the grave with no one being hurt in this situation,' she said.
