Gudas was chosen by the Everett Silvertips of the Western Hockey League (WHL) in the first round of the CHL Import Draft with the 20th pick. Gudas was admitted to the Los Angeles Kings training camp that year but not given a contract after being undrafted in the 2009 NHL Entry Draft, but not offered one. He joined the Silvertips later that fall. He had a good season with the Silvertips, with 7 goals, 30 assists, and 151 penalty minutes. When he was chosen by the Tampa Bay Lightning in the 2010 NHL Entry Draft with their 3rd-round draft pick, his Silvertips' play paid off. Gudas attended the 2010 Lightning developmental camp, which ran from 10 to 14. The Lightning reported on August 8, 2010 that they had signed Gudas to a three-year entry-level deal.
Gudas was a participant in the Tampa Bay Lightning's first NHL training camp in 2010. Gudas was reassigned to the Norfolk Admirals, Tampa Bay's American Hockey League (AHL) affiliate. Gudas' rookie season, he showed a keen desire to land big hits on his opponents as well as a packed fight card. Gudas dropped the gloves 16 times and accrued 165 penalty minutes in 76 games for the Admirals. He had 4 goals and 13 assists on the season.
He spent the entire 2011–12 season with the Admirals, and the Admirals won 28 consecutive games this season. Gudas, along with fellow Lightning prospect Mark Barberio, helped the Admiral blue-line win the 2012 Calder Cup championship in a four-game sweep of the Toronto Marlies.
Fans of the Admirals and Lightning had no idea Gudas' ability to grow a long beard, which was also known during the Admirals' playoff success. It has been a signature look of his sincerity.
The Lightning ended their association with Norfolk and began a multi-year relationship with the Syracuse Crunch in the wake of the Admirals' dream season. Gudas was assigned to the Crunch for the 2012-2013 AHL season. The Lightning recalled Gudas on March 11, 2013. He had 4 goals and 20 points for the Crunch before being remembered, and was the best-ever AHL player with a plus/minus rating of plus-32. With 207 penalty minutes, he was also ranked fourth in the league.
Gudas appeared in his first NHL game against the Florida Panthers. In 15:20 of playtime, Gudas had three blocked shots and two hits. Kris Versteeg, the Panthers' forward who tried to prevent the attack from being struck during the game, collided with him. Versteeg suffered with what seemed to be a right leg injury during the game. Versteeg would need to have season-ending knee surgery as a result of the accident, which was revealed two days later. Gudas played in 22 leagues for the remainder of the season. In his first NHL season, he had 2 goals, 3 assists, 38 penalty minutes, and was a +3. Gudas rejoined the Crunch after the NHL regular season to help Syracuse Crunch win the 2013 Calder Cup playoffs. Gudas sustained a MCL injury in the Eastern Conference Championships and missed the first four games of the Calder Cup finals. The Crunch lost to the Grand Rapids Griffins in AHL, bringing an end to Gudas' AHL career.
The Lightning reported on Monday that they had signed Gudas to a three-year contract extension.
Gudas was thrust into a top-four defense position for the season, with Eric Brewer being promoted to a more achievable 3rd pair role. Gudas continued to train his physical fitness. Gudas were also in danger at a few points during the season due to his rough and tumble in-your-face game. After falling in front of the Panthers bench, Florida Panthers forward Scottie Upshall squirting Gudas with a bottle of water from his fall. Gudas retaliated by striking his stick against the Panthers out of rage. He was banned from the game for his behavior, but the Lightning went on to win the game despite being down a defenseman. On March 5, 2014, Gudas earned a match penalty against the Dallas Stars, but Tampa Bay general manager Steve Yzerman confirmed that there will not be any more discipline from the league. In a 4 game sweep for the Montreal Canadiens, Gudas played three games in the Stanley Cup playoffs for the Lightning in his first full NHL season.
Gudas underwent arthroscopic knee surgery in the 2014–15 season, on January 6th, 2015. The Lightning has announced that he would be out for the remainder of the regular season.

Gudas, a four-year contract with the Flyers worth $13.4 million, was signed on June 23, 2016.
Gudas' Austin Czarnik, who left the game and then underwent concussion training shortly after, sustained an interfering hit on him in a preseason game against the Boston Bruins on October 8, 2016. Though Gudas was given a minor ticket for boarding during the game, the NHL Department of Player Safety eventually suspended Gudas for six games, in part due to his previous suspension in 2015.
Gudas was traded from the Flyers to the Washington Capitals in exchange for defenceman Matt Niskanen.
On the first day of the free agency, Gudas announced that he would remain in the Eastern Conference in signing a three-year, $7.5 million contract with the Florida Panthers.
