b. An Algerian poet, novelist, playwright, and critic, born on September 5th, 1941 in Aib Beda, Algeria. Boudjedra wrote in French from 1965 to 1981, at which time he switched to writing in Arabic, often translating his own works back and forth between the two languages. Boudjedra returned to writing in French in 1992 and has continued to write in that language ever since. Boudjedra, who studied in Constantine and Tunis (at the Collège Sadiki), later fought for the FLN during the Algerian War of Independence. He earned his doctorate in philosophy from Sorbonne University, where he wrote a Céline thesis. * On receiving his degree, he returned to Algeria to teach, but was sentenced to two years in jail for his opposition of the government and was exiled to Blida. * He lived in France from 1969 to 1972, first in Rabat, Morocco, 1975. Boudjedra's book is written in a difficult, complex style, reminiscent of William Faulkner or Gabriel Garca Márquez in its intricacy. * La Répudiation (1969, "The Repudiation") drew immediate attention, both for the reasons with which he defied traditional Muslim life in Algeria and the strong reaction against him. He felt he had to live outside of Algeria because a fatwa was issued for his death. * He has been dubbed the best living North African writer on record. In 2010, Boudjedra was awarded the Prix du roman arabe for Les Figuiers de Barbarie. André Naffis-Sahely has translated two of his books into English: The Barbary Figs (Haus, 2012) and Les Funérailles as The Funerals (Haus, 2015). Rachid Boudjedra has also worked on a variety of films. Chronique des années de bribe (Chronicle of the Years of Fire) (dir. * by Mohamed Lakhdar-Hamina, who claimed the Palme d'or at the Cannes Festival in 1975.
