Rachel McLish Career

Bodybuilding career

McLish worked at a health club in McAllen, Texas, while attending college. When she graduated from college, she and the health club's director formed a joint venture and established the Sport Palace Association in Harlingen. She opened two more facilities in Corpus Christi and Brownsville in 1980, with the success of the Sport Palace Association. Lisa Lyon was inspired to participate in bodybuilding thanks to Lisa Lyon and Javier Gutierrez, the club's president, who would publish her magazines of female bodybuilders and encourage her to compete. She decided to participate because the opening of her new health club would coincide with a women's bodybuilding competition and bodybuilding, giving her a platform to promote fitness to women.

McLish argues that the sport of women's bodybuilding has a special historical importance. She won the inaugural United States Championships in 1980, as well as defeating Auby Paulick to win the first-ever IFBB Ms. Olympia event of the year. No woman appeared on more magazine covers for the next five years after her 1980 Olympia victory. Dynamics Health Equipment Manufacturing Corporation sponsored her. These groundbreaking achievements, as well as her strong visual appeal, brought women's bodybuilding a new degree of media attention, which had been prompted to action by Lisa Lyon.

McLish, who competed for only four years, was a tenacious competitor, never placing lower than third in any competition she entered. She lost her Ms. Olympia title to Kike Elomaa in 1981 because her body was not as defined as normal. She regained her position at the 1982 Ms. Olympia when she defeated Carla Dunlap to reclaim her position. In those respective competitions, both Paulick and Dunlap had more muscle than McLish, but neither could quite match McLish's overall appeal. Dunlap defeated her in the 1983 Caesar's World Cup final contest. In the 1984 Ms. Olympia, she came in second, behind Cory Everson. Any competitors expressed surprise at McLish's high ranking because she didn't have the muscle mass carried by many of the top women, according to several outlets reporting the case. Despite Dunlap's fifth place finish as the defending Ms. Olympian, the 1985 Strength Training for Beauty cover said "Cory dethrones Rachel."

McLish, who finished second at the 1984 IFBB Ms. Olympia, has retired from competitive bodybuilding.

McLish was the first winner of the Ms. Olympian Championships. She is one of bodybuilding's most recognizable personalities. She was inducted into the IFBB Hall of Fame in January 1999.

McLish, a Christian, identifies herself as a compassionate conservative. She encountered John P. McLish, who married on February 3, 1979, while attending Pan American University. They later divorced. She married film director Ron Samuels in 1990. In 1996, she and her husband lived in Rancho Mirage, California. Coco Crisp, a Boston Red Sox player, sold her house for $3 million in 2008.

McLish appeared in the 1985 film Pumping Iron II: The Women, which focused on her involvement in the 1983 Caesar's World Cup. She appeared in the films Getting Physical (1984), Aces: Iron Eagle III (1992), and Raven Hawk (1996). They all involved her appearance as a physically fit woman. She was one of the first women to play such a role. She appeared in Herb Alpert's 'Red Hot' music video, as well as as a actress. In the fitness instructional film Shape Up (1982), she co-starred alongside Arnold Schwarzenegger.

McLish has written two books on weight control for women that made the New York Times bestseller list – Flex Appeal, Rachel, and Perfect Parts. She is now working on two books that emphasize fitness and diet.
