Why I was devastated when the doctor told me I DIDN'T have cancer: Author Wendy Mitchell, 68, describes how she longed for any escape from the grip of dementia

www.dailymail.co.uk, February 16, 2024
I started losing weight a few years ago, for no apparent reason. Even as I waited for an appointment to see my GP, the pounds were falling off me. I was positive I had cancer. 'You know I don't want treatment?' I told my GP that I had told him. The GP sent me for tests, and she was obnoxious when they came back. How did I feel? Disappointed. Deflated. Esther Rantzen, a television presenter who suffers from lung cancer and is nearing the end of her life, said recently that she joined Dignitas and considered going to a Swiss clinic to end her life. She has since started a petition for a parliamentary election, which now has more than 120,000 signatures. And if the law were to change in the near future, it would not include people like me. Many that are calling for assisted death in the United Kingdom are only asking that those with terminal illnesses - and those with fewer than six months to live - be allowed to end their lives with dignity. I would never say that it would take me to die of dementia because the time is unknowable - it could take years. So I write this post with no intention of profit, but with the intention of ensuring that this discussion affects people in a multitude of situations.

Lindsay Duncan, an actress, says she made sure her mother, who suffered with dementia, went 'cooperatively' by refusing to have surgery at the end of her life, and hopes that her family would do the same for her

The actress, 73, (left), who hails from Scotland but lives in London, has expressed concern for her family's welfare, and she hopes that her family would do the same for her. Lindsay told Emma Barnett that she was'very close' with her mother and 'knew her better than anyone else' in a snippet of the interview posted on the show's Instagram. 'She had hormonal problems and wanted to find what was wrong with her,' the actress explained. Lindsay is now starring Truelove, a darkly comic representation of assisted dying.

Dame Esther Rantzen's daughter is concerned that if she assists her cancer-stricken mother, 83, in travelling to a charity abroad, she may be charged with murder

If her next scan reveal she is getting worse, the Childline founder, 83, who was diagnosed with stage four lung disease earlier this year, has joined the assisted-dying clinic in Switzerland and may consider going there to end her life. Dame Esther said that making such a decision would put her family and friends in a difficult situation, as they could be charged if they choose to join her. Rebecca Wilcox's daughter told TalkTV today, 'It's impossible, isn't it, because I can't even say to you, I would help my mother on her trip to Dignitas because if I said that, it's legally murky.'

If her mother, 83, flies to Dignitas, Dame Esther Rantzen's daughter would'want to ground the plane,' but she supports her right to decide - as she admits the childline founder's cancer diagnosis was 'promising she'll live forever'

www.dailymail.co.uk, December 19, 2023
If her next scan reveal she is getting worse, the Childline founder, 83, who was diagnosed with stage four lung cancer earlier this year, has joined the assisted-dying clinic in Switzerland and may consider going there to end her life. Rebecca Wilcox, Rebecca Wilcox's daughter, shared how her family responded to such a personal decision today. She told ITV's Good Morning Britain, 'She never makes a decision in complete silence, but she doesn't care what anyone else says.' It's sad, and she has told us she will live forever. We're not about to break her commitments right now, so we're a little worried about it. If she were going to fly to Zurich, I would personally like to ground her plane, but I know it's her decision. I just don't want her to go.'

I took my mother to Dignitas after she died but was relieved that her agony had ended... Then a phone call from the police brought a new nightmare

www.dailymail.co.uk, December 13, 2023
MANDY APPLEYARD: My incredibly strong, stoic mother had wanted to end her life for nearly two years, and this was heartbreaking. I was devastated by my grief, but a few weeks later, I was also under police scrutiny. I should have been able to support my mother at a time when I should not have been allowed to mourn my beloved mother, but police interviewed me under caution for two hours. I have a great sympathy and sympathy for Rachael Stirling, who has shared how her mother, actress Diana Rigg (pictured together) wished for death as she battled with the last stages of lung cancer.
