Decision to free Serial's Adnan Syed appealed by murder victim's family

www.dailymail.co.uk, January 24, 2023
Hae Min Lee's family is attempting to appeal a decision to dismiss all charges against Adnan Syed, saying that the inquiry was held in secrecy and that no one was given with the facts used to reverse Syed's conviction. Syed spent 23 years in jail, repeatedly questioning the evidence used to convict him for Lee's murder in 1999, which became the basis of the Serial podcast. Prosecutors argued in October that new evidence indicating that Syed was innocent of the murder had been uncovered, but Lee's family said they were unable to provide them with the correct information or detail about what it was. They are now requesting that a Maryland Appeals Court redo Syed's public hearing and provide them with the proper evidence to testify.

TOM LEONARD: Innocent or guilty?Adnan Syed freed after being convicted of murdering girlfriend

www.dailymail.co.uk, September 21, 2022
Adnan Syed walked along the steps of Baltimore's City Circuit Court (inset) and savoured his first glimpse of liberty in 23 years, surrounded by cheering supporters on their phones. On Monday afternoon, as he arrived in a white shirt and blue tie, but looking washed out after decades in the tough U.S. prison system, he smiled and waved to his followers before being led away to await the next step in his sensational 'fight for justice.' Syed was 41 years old (left) when he was convicted in 2000 of strangling his ex-girlfriend, Hae Min Lee (pictured with Syed left), whose body had been found in the previous year but partially buried in woodland. Sarah Koenig (right), an ex-crime reporter for the Baltimore Sun, had been struck by the inconsistent evidence and underwhelming results of Syed's defense prosecutor at his appeal. Barbara Mosby, Baltimore's state attorney, was encouraged by Koenig's work as a reporter and podcaster to launch a year-long probe into Syed's murder.
