Professional career

Wonjongkam had a record of 9-2 early in his career. Jerry Pahayahay, a Filipino journeyman who Wonjongkam would defeat by a 10-round decision in February 1998. Wonjongkam defeated his second bout on July 11, 1996 to July 18, 2007, the longest continuous win streak in boxing at the time.

Wonjongkam defeated Mzukisi Sikali of South Africa in 48 seconds on March 28, 1997, defeating them in the WBU Light Flyweight Championship in 48 seconds. Sikali will continue to win both the IBO Flyweight and WBU Super Flyweight titles.

Wonjongkam defeated Malcolm Tutacao for the WBC and Lineal Flyweight Championships on March 2, 2001. Tuacao won the Flyweight Lineage Championship from Medgoen Singsurat, who took the title by knocking out Manny Pacquiao. Pacquiao will later become the world's most pound fighter. After knocking Tuacao down three times, Wonjongkam was able to win by a first-round TKO.

Wonjongkam defeated Japanese flyweight champion Daisuke Naito in 34 seconds in his fourth Lineal and WBC Flyweight titles defense in April 19, 2002. This knockout set the new record for the fastest knockout in division history.

Wonjongkam defeated Monelisi Mhikiza Myekeni by a unanimous decision on November 17, 2006. With this victory, Wonjongkam tied for consecutive championship defenses for the sixth time. After Shibizu retired on his stool between the 6th and the 7th rounds, he successfully defended his title against Tomonobu Shimizu. Wonjonkgam, the 16th boxer, defended his name against, establishing another flyweight record.

In Ring magazine's pound-for-pound rankings, Wonjongkam was ranked number ten, but Jermain Taylor took him off the list on June 18, 2006. Before his loss to Daisuke Naito in 2007, Wonjongkam was ranked as the Ring's top flyweight.

In July, 2007, Wonjongkam suffered a humiliating decision loss to Daisuke Naito, bringing an end to his long run as champion. In previous titles defenses, Wonjongkam had defeated Naito twice. Wonjongkam and Naito met in a rematch that resulted in a draw on March 8, 2008.

In a match against Mexican Julio César Miranda on April 24, 2009, Wonjongkam won the vacant Interim WBC Flyweight Championship. The 12 round tournament was decided unanimously by a unanimous vote. Wonjongkam defended his interim title against Takahisu Masuda by knocking out, setting the tone for a match against Lineal WBC Flyweight Champion Koki Kameda, who had recently defeated Naito to win the title.

Wonjongkam defeated Lineal Champion Koki Kameda on March 27, 2010 to unify the WBC Flyweight Championship and the Interim WBC Flyweight Championship. The champion will also win the vacant The Ring Flyweight Championship. Wonjongkam defeated Kameda by a landslide majority decision in order to become the WBC and Ring Flyweight champion.

In an upset technical knockout victory over Sonny Boy Jaro of Philippines, Wonjongkam lost his Lineal, The Ring, and WBC Flyweight titles. Before the match was stopped in the sixth round, he was knocked down five times.

On August 31, 2012, Wonjongkam claimed the vacant WBC International flyweight title against Hyobu Nakagama. However, he lost the title to Rey Megrino in a third-round TKO on November 1, 2012, marking Wonjongkam's fifth loss. Even more disappointing for Wonjongkam, Megrino had a losing record of 17-20-3 going into the match, and had been defeated twice by Wonjongkam, first by ten-round UD in October 2007, and a first round stoppage in July 2010.
