Peter Porter Life

Peter Neville Porter OAM (born February 1929 – March 20, 2010) was a British-based Australian poet.

Life

Porter was born in Brisbane, Australia, in 1929. Marion B. Johnson died of a burst gallbladder in 1938. He was educated at the Anglican Church Grammar School (then called the Church of England Grammar School) and left school at eighteen to work as a trainee journalist at The Courier-Mail. However, he only served with the paper for a year before being dismissed. In 1951, he immigrated to England. He met Jill Neville, the future author of the United Kingdom, on board the ferry. Porter was depicted in Neville's first book, The Fall Girl (1966). He returned to Brisbane after two suicide attempts. He was back in England ten months later. He first began attending "The Group" meetings in 1955. He had a great relationship with "The Group" that enabled him to produce his first collection in 1961.

He married Jannice Henry, a nurse from Marlow, Buckinghamshire, in 1961, and they had two children (born in 1962 and 1965). He worked in advertising during this time and was finding jobs in the literary press. In 1974, Jannice committed suicide, greatly impacting Porter's work, particularly The Cost of Seriousness. Porter married Christine Berg, a child psychologist, in 1991.

He was born Poet in Residence at the Royal Albert Hall in 2001. In 2004, he was a candidate for the position of Professor of Poetry at Oxford University. He was named a member of the Royal Society of Literature Companion of Literature in 2007, an award bestowed to a select number of ten living writers.

Porter died on April 23, 2010 at the age of 81, after suffering from liver cancer for a year. The Australian Book Review (ABR) announced that it would rename its ABR Poetry Prize as the Peter Porter Poetry Prize in honor of Porter's death in 2010. He was buried on the east side of Highgate Cemetery.
