Peter Fintan Lalor (5 February 1827 – 9 February 1889) was an Irish-Australian rebel and, later, a politician who came to fame for his leading part in the Eureka Rebellion, which was controversially credited with Australia's "birth of democracy."
He is well-known for being the only one outlaw to make it to parliament.
Early life
Lalor was born at Tenakill House, Raheen, in Queen's County (later Laois) in Ireland, which was part of the United Kingdom at the time. Patt Lalor, the son of Ann (née Dillon) and Patrick "Patt" Lalor, a landowner and promoter of the abolition of tithes, served as a member of the British parliament (MP) in 1832-1860; Patt Lalor was the first Catholic MP from Queen's County since the anti-Catholic Test Acts of the 17th century. He had 11 children: Joseph Lalor, James Flintan Lalor, Richard Lalor, Richard Lalor, Mary Lalor, Patrick Lalor, Patrick Lalor, Thomas Lalor, Margaret Lalor, Margrett Ellen Lalor, Jerome Lalor, Peter Lalor, of whom Peter was the youngest, and William A.Lalor snr. James Fintan Lalor, the eldest brother who was later involved in the Young Ireland movement and the failed rebellion of 1848, was the eldest brother of 1848. Richard Lalor, another brother, later became a member of the Parnellite nationalist Party. Patt Lalor remarried later to Ellen Mary Anne Loughnan (with whom he had no children) on June 4th, 1835. Peter Lalor was educated at Carlow College and then trained as a civil engineer at Trinity College.
Three of the Lalor brothers immigrated to America and battled on both directions of the Civil War. However, Peter and his brother Richard decided to go to Australia, arriving in Victoria in October 1852. Lalor was first involved in the development of the Melbourne-Geelong railway line but then had to withdraw to participate in the Victorian Gold Rush. He began mining in the Ovens digs (Beechworth), then headed to Ballarat's Eureka Lead, where he befriended Duncan Gillies (who later became Premier of Victoria). Richard's brother returned to Ireland, becoming politically active, and himself a member of the House of Commons.
Later life and death
Alicia Dunne was married in Geelong on July 10, 1855. Anne (Annie), the couple's daughter, was born in Prahran in 1856, and Joseph was born in Sandridge (now Port Melbourne) on December 1857. Annie Lalor married Thomas Lempriere in 1882, but she died of pulmonary phthisis three years later. Joseph Lalor became a medical doctor, marrying Agnes McCormick of Dublin, Ireland, and leaving descendants.
Alicia Lalor died on May 17th, 1887, at the age of 55. Following her resignation, Peter Lalor took leave from Parliament and toured San Francisco, California.
Lalor died on Saturday, 9 February 1889, age 62, at his son's home in Richmond, and was buried at the Melbourne General Cemetery.
