Peter Simpson Hedges (born July 6, 1962) is an American novelist, playwright, screenwriter, film editor, and film producer.
Early life
Hedges was born in West Des Moines, Iowa, where he was raised, the son of Carole (Simpson), a psychotherapist, and the Rev. An Episcopal priest, Robert Boyden Hedges. His mother died when he was young, so he was raised by his single parent. He attended Valley High School, where he was active in the theater program, as well as the Bakers Dozen, an improvisational group and the mime troupe. He then attended the North Carolina School of the Arts, where he concentrated on drama.
Personal life
Susan Bruce (Titman), a poet, is his wife. Simon, who works in private equity in New York, and Academy Award-nominated actor Lucas Hedges are among their two children.
Career
What's Eating Gilbert Grape, Hedges' book, was turned into a critically acclaimed film of the same name, for which he wrote the screenplay, launching his film career.
He received an Academy Award nomination for the Best Adapted Screenplay for About a Boy in 2002. He wrote and directed Pieces of April, starring Katie Holmes, which he dedicated to his mother in the same year.
He co-wrote and directed Dan in Real Life, 2007, which was his first film involvement.
