Early years and career
Peabo Bryson, a native of Greenville, South Carolina, spent the majority of his childhood on his grandfather's farm in Mauldin, South Carolina. His passion for music began with his mother, who often took the family to concerts of well-known African-American artists at the time.
Bryson performed backup for Al Freeman and the Upsetters, a local Greenville band, on his debut at age 14. The problem was Freeman's inability in pronouncing Peapo, Bryson's French West-Indian name that caused Bryson to appear as Peabo. He returned home two years ago to tour the Chitlin' Circuit with another local band, Moses Dillard and the Tex-Town Show. Bryson's first break came during a recording session at Bang Records in Atlanta. Despite the fact that Bang was unimpressed with Dillard's band, the young backup singer caught Eddie Biscoe's attention, the label's general manager. Biscoe negotiated Bryson as a writer, producer, and arranger, as well as assisting Bryson in performing his own songs. Bryson performed with hometown bands and performed for Bang for many years. With "Underground Music" on the Bang label in 1976, he began his own recording career. Peabo, his first album, was followed shortly thereafter. Though Bryson signed to Capitol Records in 1977, it was only a regional success.
"Feel the Fire" and "Reaching for the Sky", 1978's "I'm So into You," and "Crosswinds," Bryson's "Let the Feeling Flow" (his first Top ten pop single at No. 10) are two of his best solo hits. "Show and Tell" on 1989's "Show and Tell" in the United States, and "Can You Stop the Rain" in 1991. He appeared on the soap opera One Life to Live in 1985 to perform a lyrical version of the company's theme tune. Bryson's vocals were added to the regular theme song in 1986, and his voice was heard every day until 1992. In 1983, Roberta Flack (Born to Love) released a successful album of romantic love duets. Bryson produced two hit duets: "Without You," the love theme from Leonard Part 6, recorded in 1987, and "A Whole New World," the Disney's animated feature film Aladdin's main theme, was "A Whole New World." "Without You" (in 1987), "I Can't Imagine" (in 1991), "A Whole New World" (in 1992) and "Total Praise" (in 2009).
These are among his romantic love songs and duets.
In 1992 with Celine Dion, Bryson appeared on "Beauty and the Beast" and in 1993 for Regina Belle's "A Whole New World";
With the song "Dream (Twinken's Tune), Bryson appeared in Barney's Great Adventure: An Original Motion Picture Musical Soundtrack" in early 1998.
Bryson appeared in theater and operatic productions, most notably in the tenor role of "Sportin' Life" in Detroit's Porgy and Bess. On August 21, 2003, when the Internal Revenue Service confiscated property from his Atlanta, Georgia home, his tax problems caught up with him. He is expected to owe $1.2 million in taxes dating back to 1984. Many of his possessions were auctioned by the IRS, including Grammy Awards, electronics, his grand piano, and several pairs of shoes.
