Paula Zahn Life

Paula Ann Zahn (born February 24, 1956) is an American journalist and newscaster who has been an anchor at ABC News, CBS News, Fox News, and CNN.

On the Case with Paula Zahn of Investigation Discovery, she currently produces and hosts On the Case of a True Crime documentary film.

Personal life

With Richard Cohen, a New York City real estate developer, Zahn has three children, Austin, Jared, and Haley. Cohen is Jewish and his children are raised in his faith.

In 2004, the couple was in the news when the nest of the well-known red-tailed hawk Pale Male was removed from their Manhattan co-op building. Cohen, the co-op board's president, approved the removal; in 2001, Zahn had complained of the hawk and its insatisfaction with rats and pigeons.

After 20 years of marriage, Zahn announced in April 2007 that she was divorced Cohen. Zahn also filed a lawsuit against Cohen in the same year, alleging that he mismanaged 20 years' worth of her career. The case was dismissed by the New York state court, finding that it "is not a commercial case" rather than a matrimonial litigation masquerading as a commercial conflict."

In May 1992 with the New York Pops orchestra, Zahn appeared cello at Carnegie Hall. She has served as an honorary board member of the Multiple Myeloma Research Foundation and has been an active advocate for breast cancer research in general and breast cancer in particular.

Zahn received an honorary degree from Dowling College of Oakdale, New York, in May 2003.

Paula Zahn Career

Early life and career

Zahn was born in Omaha, Nebraska, to a schoolteacher/artist mother and an IBM sales executive father. She grew up in Canton, Ohio, with her parents and three siblings. Since her father's occupation required them to move frequently, the family was relocated to Naperville, Illinois. She once joked that "IBM" really stood for "I've been moved." She attended Washington Junior High School in Naperville and later graduated from Naperville Central High School in 1974. Zahn also competed in several beauty pageants, earning the semi-finals of the 1973 Miss Teenage America Pageant. She continued her education at Stephens College in Columbia, Missouri, on a cello scholarship, and gained firsthand experience of the media by working as an intern at WBBM-TV in Chicago. She earned a bachelor's degree in journalism in 1978. Zahn spent the next ten years in Dallas, Dallas, KFMB-TV in San Diego, KPRC-TV in Houston, and KCBS-TV in Los Angeles, among other local stations around the country, including WFAA-TV (then WNEV) in Dallas.

National career

Zahn accepted an invitation to work at ABC News in 1987, first anchoring The Health Show, a weekend series on health and medical problems. She was co-anchoring World News This Morning, the network's early morning newscast, and anchoring news segments on Good Morning America as well as replacing co-host Joan Lunden within a few months.

Zahn was offered a job at CBS News in 1990, when she co-anchoring CBS This Morning with Harry Smith beginning on February 26, 1990. She covered the Waco massacre in Albertville, France, with Tim McCarver and the 1994 Winter Olympics in Lillehammer, Norway. Both she and Smith resigned after changes were made at the morning show in 1996, with their last day being June 14, 1996. Zahn went on to work as the CBS Evening News anchor, as well as substituteing Dan Rather during the week and contributing to 48 Hours, Public Eye with Bryant Gumbel and CBS News Sunday Morning.

Zahn left CBS News in 1999 after nine years as news anchor, Fox News Channel (FNC), where she anchored Fox News and anchored Fox News, the network's nightly newscast. The Edge with Paula Zahn, months later, helped launch her own prime time news service, The Edge.

Zahn began working at CNN on September 11, 2001, joining anchor Aaron Brown in the coverage of the day's terrorist attacks as her reaction to the events. Despite being unable to be on a CNN show, which was still in the works, she began a regular morning news shift the next day. She founded American Morning with Paula Zahn, a CNN morning news show.

Zahn returned to prime time in 2003, hosting a two-hour program called Live from the Headlines, which featured continuing coverage of the war and other events. Anderson Cooper dominated the first two hours by early summer, and her show, Paula Zahn Now, premiered in September.

On July 24, 2007, she resigned from CNN. Paula Zahn Now's last broadcast appeared on August 2, 2007. Campbell Brown, the former co-host of Weekend Today, was fired less than a day after CNN recruited him. Initially, guest hosts virtually carried out Zahn's program under the heading Out in the Open. This was later replaced by election campaign coverage and, in the end, Brown's operation, Campbell Brown: No Bias, No Bull.

"I want to take a break between jobs and catch my breath before I take on my next position," Zahn's goodbye letter to CNN employees. Zahn told Jacques Steinberg that "he had no idea what she was doing next" in a New York Times interview, which was conducted right after her resignation was announced.

Zahn became the new co-host of SundayArts on New York City PBS stations WNET and WLIW on November 9, 2008. The program, which focuses on the fine arts scene in New York City, is now called NYC-ARTS and airs on Thursday evenings.

Zahn, as well as producing partner Scott Weinberger and Scott Sternberg, announced on January 9, 2009 that they had entered into a development agreement for a true crime documentary film series. On the Case With Paula Zahn, the Investigation Discovery cable channel premiered on October 18, 2009.

Zahn hosted the annual "From Vienna: The New Year's Celebration" episode of the anthology series Great Performances on PBS on New Year's Day 2011.
