West grew up in Eckington, a small mining town in Derbyshire, England, England. He was often unemployed, partly blinded during World War I. His mother, a natural pianist, gave private lessons to help the family. She encouraged West in his love of words and literary aspirations. West said in an interview with author and literary critic David W. Madden in 1989, he was also encouraged by three teachers, "amazing women who taught English, French, and Greek" at an otherwise "poor grammar academy." "Marvelous to me," he said. They encouraged me because they felt I had a gift for languages and should explore it further, and they groomed me."
West studied at Lincoln College, Oxford, and then as a Smith-Mundt scholar at Columbia University in the United States from 1952 to 1953, from which he earned a master's degree. His early life involved a stint in the Royal Air Force from 1954 to 1957, during which he attained the rank of flight lieutenant. He taught English literature at Memorial University of Newfoundland from 1957 to 1962, and then started teaching at Pennsylvania State University. He met Diane Ackerman, who later became his wife, in the early 1970s.
