Part ONE of the Man United idol, the most prolific striker in English history, and the Brazilian who failed to make the majority of his talents

www.dailymail.co.uk, March 25, 2024
OLIVER HOLT: Any list - your list as well as mine - can be dominated by those who are not on it. However, it should really be about the participants who are on it. This list is meant to be a salute to them and of football's rich, rich past, as well as what the game means to all of us and what players represent and why they capture something in us. You'll disagree with some of the names on the list, and you'll be correct. Another man's garbage is another man's treasure. The depth of our passion for the game and the ferocity of our opinions about the players are only two of the factors that make football so beautiful.

As he joins several members of the Euro 96 squad for paying tribute to Terry Venables, England legend Paul Gascoigne watches the Three Lions' friendly against Brazil at Wembley from the stands

www.dailymail.co.uk, March 23, 2024
After the capacity crowd erupted, Venables, who managed the national team from 1994 to 1996, was warmly remembered ahead of kick-off. The FA invited the Euro 96 team, which included Gascoigne and Alan Shearer, to attend a commemoration service in the Wembley Suite before attending the match from the Royal Box. It was the first England game since Venables, who also appeared on the front of the official matchday programme, died in November aged 80. Gascoigne was pictured ahead of kick-off in a dramatic three-piece suit and black tie. During his career, England capped the football legend 57 times, but he has battled alcohol and mental health issues for the past 40 years.

He played in England's first game against Brazil and became his club's first Three Lions international in 100 years. Who is he?

www.dailymail.co.uk, March 20, 2024
Since the Three Lions' inaugural international fixture against Scotland in 1872, 1277 players have had the honor of representing England. Many of these celebrities have adapted to folklore and become national stars, including Peter Shilton, Paul Gascoigne, and late great Sir Bobby Charlton. However, several others have left the international stage by barely leaving a mark, with 365 players falling in the top one-cap wonders list.

Paul Gascoigne's genuine story behind him. IAN LADYMAN: And don't blame football for the naughtiness

www.dailymail.co.uk, March 7, 2024
IAN LADYMAN: Paul Gascoigne's autobiography was selected as a Sports Book of the Year in 2004 and with good reason. It's utterly convincing. Gascoigne said, 'This is the third time I have won in two years.' I've also won against alcohol and opioids. I hope it's for life.' Gascoigne expressed the hope on the High Performance Podcast this week, revealing that it had not been in vain. The former Tottenham, Newcastle, and England midfield player has been sleeping in his agent's spare room and seeking solace from Alcoholics Anonymous's meetings.

www.dailymail.co.uk, March 7, 2024
Magic formulas must exist for successful TV shows, but actors and writers have yet to find a foolproof spell. Instead, they keep falling back on the classics, remaking favourite shows in the hopes that lightning will strike twice. Here we examine eight classics and compare them to their remakes - some are better than the original, some are more popular but equally good, and at least one of them is a horrible clunker.

Robert Ponnick's amazing tale: How an aspiring Serie B owner pulled off football's biggest stunt by acquiring a Premier League 'goal machine' to save his team from relegation

www.dailymail.co.uk, February 17, 2024
One of football's greatest miracles is the extraordinary tale of Italian team Castel di Sangro and their meteoric rise from local football to Serie B. Their journey, chronicled by American writer Joe McGinniss, also ranks among the best works of football literature. However, one chapter in particular stands out as more strange than fiction - Robert Raku Ponnick's bizarre cameo. It's the fall of 1996, and Castel di Sangro, the miracle-workers from the tiny Abruzzo town of only 5,500 people, is at its zenith. They have increased from the Seconda Categoria of the Abruzzo regional league through six promotions, each more unexpected than the previous one, to the second tier of the Italian game in less than a decade.

The newspaper owner, 54, was staying at the hotel when he went outside for a cigarette and saw his 'hero' look worse for wear. He did not witness a fight but told the pair that they should 'do one' when they tried to grab the £10 he promised Gascoigne to get a taxi home.
