Teesside Crown Court heard that the youngster was driving the car and tooting on the horn when his father Patrick Kearney handled the pedals. After hearing reports from other drivers that the van was constantly swerving as it traveled through Darlington, County Durham, officers launched a chase with flashing blue lights. At the time of the shooting, Kearney, 41, was believed to be under the influence of opioids and alcohol. Despite being followed by police, the child continued driving, according to the judge. Kearney was seen to scream to a house with the youngster in his arms and hand the child to another man as the van came to a stop.
