Patrick Hallahan Life

My Morning Jacket is an American rock band formed in Louisville, Kentucky, in 1998.

The band now features vocalist/guitarist Jim James, bassist Tom Blankenship, drummer Patrick Hallahan, guitarist Carl Broemel, and keyboardist Bo Koster.

The band's sound, which is rooted in rock and country, is often experimental and psychedelic.

In part due to the group's live performances, the group amassed a following since 2000. Since the debut of its debut album, The Tennessee Fire (1999), the group found success in Europe.

Its next generation, At Dawn (2001), resulted in a major stateside parade and preceded several line revisions.

The group unveiled two albums, It Still Moves (2003) and Z (2005), after being signed to major label ATO Records, with the latter representing a critical breakthrough.

Evil Urges (2008), the company's next album, was more popular with fans and observers, but Circuital (2011), its sixth album, saw a more measured reaction.

The Waterfall, the band's seventh album, after many years of side projects and touring, was released in 2015.

Early years and breakthrough (2001–2007)

At Dawn (2001), the band's second attempt, helped the group reach a large audience in its home country. James recorded his vocals in a grain silo, giving the album a sounded heavy on echo that was a signature of the band's early recordings. J. Glenn, the drummer, left the band and was briefly replaced by Chris Guetig. Guetig was replaced by Patrick Hallahan, James' childhood best friend. The band toured heavily in the early 2000s, often supporting bands like Guided by Voices, Doves, and Foo Fighters. In 2002, the company began to work with ATO Records, a British firm, ahead of its third album, It Still Moves, which was released in September 2003 to widespread acclaim. Cash and Quaid announced their departure from the company in January 2004; keyboardist Bo Koster and guitarist Carl Broemel were swapped for them.

Z, the group's debut album, was released in 2005. It received positive feedback; critic David Fricke wrote, "America is a lot closer to having its own Radiohead, but it isn't Wilco." The album was notable for a departure from James' remarkably reverbed vocals and experimental experiments with dub, reggae, and psychedelic rock. In 2006, Okonokos, a live album shot during the band's tour Z, was released.

The band's next album, Evil Urges, marks a major change in their sound, and has received polarizing reactions from fans and critics. Many songs on the album were born on 90-minute walks in Louisville. Its lyrics were focused on an intimate relationship that ended shortly before recording. The band appeared on Saturday Night Live to promote the album. The band toured in support of the album this summer, which included a memorable appearance at the Bonnaroo Music Festival in Manchester, Tennessee. The band, which began at midnight, lasted for four hours in the rain. The band's set went on to feature thirty-five songs, including all but two tracks from Evil Urges and numerous covers, as well as a guest appearance from Metallica's Kirk Hammett. The set has often been regarded as one of the best in the festival's history. "It's new," Rolling Stone said. Evil Urges was nominated for the Best Alternative Rock Album by the Grammy Awards. At Madison Square Garden in New York, My Morning Jacket performed before a sold-out audience. The band members appeared as themselves in the American Dad! "My Morning Straitjacket" was the episode that aired on November 22, 2009.

My Morning Jacket took up residency at Terminal 5 in New York on October 18, 21, 22, and 23, performing one of its five studios each night, as well as additional material from the relevant period. My Morning Jacket started working on its new LP in September 16, 2010 issue of Rolling Stone. "We've got five songs to do," Frontman Jim James says. "It'll almost be out next year." In an old church in My Morning Jacket's hometown, Louisville, Kentucky, James co-produced the album with The Decemberists collaborator Tucker Martine. "We're trying to do everything but the strings live," James said. "It's got a sense of age and dirty." Circuital, the band's sixth album, was released on May 31, 2011. For two years, the band toured for two years in support of Circuital. It began a tour with Wilco and Bob Dylan in 2013, leaving band members dissatisfied because Dylan had falsely been told Dylan wanted to work with them.

While the band took a break, James stayed busy, performing behind his solo album, Regions of Light and Sound of God, and collaborating with Elvis Costello and Marcus Mumford on the New Basement Tapes project. According to Blankenship, these individual side projects, rather than detach the musicians, served to improve band members' abilities as musicians. Following the group's return to it, they gained a greater appreciation of it. The band's forthcoming record, The Waterfall, was mainly recorded at a hilltop mansion above Stinson Beach, California. The band's impressions were "slightly supernatural," resulting in a largely idyllic recording process. The Waterfall was released in May 2015 in the United States, debuting number 11 on the Billboard 200 in the United States, with 33,000 copies sold in its first week. The Waterfall was nominated for the Grammy Award for Best Alternative Music Album in December 2015.

The Waterfall's sessions were fruitful, with over 24 songs being released, enough to fill two albums. MMJ held the majority of 2018 and early 2019 off touring, but MMJ rescheduled for select shows in August 2019. James rated the performances as one of his recent MMJ performances, and claims that the company addressed some of their personal concerns well before the shows. During their extended break, the members of My Morning Jacket expressed that they were not sure if they'd be back for a period of time.

On July 10, 2020, the Waterfall II was announced. To the charity tribute album The Metallica Blacklist, the band contributed a cover of Metallica's "Nothing Else Matters" from the Metallica album "The Human Race" which was released in September 2021. The band's ninth studio album, titled My Morning Jacket, was released on October 22, 2021. "Regularly Scheduled Programming" became its first single on August 24 along with a accompanying music video.
