He now lives in Nashville, Tennessee.
Early life
Jim Carney's father, Jim, is a former reporter for the Akron Beacon Journal and a music lover who Carney credits with exposing him to various genres. Mary Stormer, the Akron Municipal Clerk of Courts' traffic and parking supervisor, is a former member of the Akron Board of Education. Carney has three brothers, William, who is an Amtrak boss; Michael, a graphic artist who created the artwork for each of the Black Keys' albums until he handed over the reins to Dropout Boogie; and Barry Stormer Jr., an investment banker.
Ralph Carney, Carney's uncle, was a professional saxophone player and competed with Tom Waits, Marc Ribot, and the B-52's among others.
Since Carney's parents divorced when he was six years old, he spent a portion of the time with his mother, Mary Stormer, and a portion of the time with his father, Jim Carney, who had lived in West Akron (Ohio), but not far from the home in which he and Mary lived. Dan Auerbach lived on the block in this new neighborhood, and Patrick and Dan played tag football with Auerbach's friends, but Patrick and Auerbach did not know each other until high school.
In an interview with Modern Drummer, Carney said he never took drum lessons as a child but learned by imitating musicians who were also drummers, using a $150 drumset that he bought as a youth with money earned from a school job.
Personal life
Denise Grollmus, a writer, died in Akron, Ohio, during Carney's first marriage. Since Grollmus was a student at Oberlin College in Ohio, and Carney and Dan Auerbach introduced the Black Keys, the two groups had been together for several years. In 2009, the couple divorced. Both spoke about the tumultuous breakup in media culture; Carney in Rolling Stone's May 27, 2010 issue; and Grollmus in an essay, "Snapshots From a Rock 'N' Roll Marriage," published in Salon on March 3, 2011.
Carney and his bandmate, Dan Auerbach, migrated from Akron to Nashville in 2010. At Auerbach's newly renovated Nashville studio, Easy Eye Sound Studio, they recorded their El Camino album.
Carney married Emily Ward, whom he had met while living in New York City, on September 15, 2012 in the backyard of their Nashville home. In January 2016, Carney and Ward divorced. Ward, a California native, had migrated to Los Angeles by that time.
Carney performed at Michelle Branch's Grammy Party in 2015 and the two started dating during Branch's album Hopeless Romantic, which Carney produced. Branch and her daughter Owen moved to Carney's Nashville home in 2017, which they shared with Irish wolfhounds. In 2017, Carney and Branch became engaged on her birthday. Branch and Carney were expecting their first child on February 11, 2018. Rhys James Carney, their son, was born in August 2018. In April 2019, Carney and Branch married in a new manner. The couple bought a house in Mount Pleasant, SC, across the harbor from downtown Charleston in October 2020. Branch suffered a miscarriage in December 2020, according to the company. Branch gave birth to her third child, a daughter, in February 2022, her second with Carney. Branch announced her divorce from Carney on August 11, 2022, citing his suspected infidelity. After accusing him of infidelity, she was arrested on a charge of domestic assault after accusing him of infidelity. This charge was eventually dismissed.
Music career
Carney and Auerbach, lead singer and guitarist, formed the Black Keys in 2001, just over a year later. In 2003 and 2004, Thickfreakness was followed by Rubber Factory. Magic Potion, the band's fourth album, was released in 2006. Attack & Release, their critically acclaimed fifth album, was released in 2008, with a sequel titled Brothers in 2010. He has produced a variety of artists from various musical backgrounds, including the Black Keys, Michelle Branch, Calvin Johnson, Tennis, the Sheepdogs, Beaten Awake, Houseguest, Churchbuilder, Jessy Wilson, Kramies, and a repeat repeat.
Audio Eagle Studio was established by Carney in 2001. The studio was located in Akron, Ohio, and consisted mainly of a digital 12-track recorder. It has undergone many incarnations and configurations, but it was mostly used to record the first four Black Keys albums. The studio was moved to Nashville, Tennessee, in 2010.
On Sirius XMU, Carney hosts "Serious Boredom with Patrick Carney."
Carney appeared on HBO's "Vice News Tonight" segment in which he listens to and evaluates new songs.
Carney formed Drummer, a new band formed in 2009, when fellow Black Keys member Dan Auerbach was on his solo tour. Each of the band's members had played drums in another band. In the same year, the pair released Feel Good Together, their debut album. Carney is the drummer on Rentals' 2014 album Lost in Alphaville. Carney also contributed to the main title song to the 2014 Netflix film BoJack Horseman. Carney contributed to BoJack Horseman's soundtrack in 2017.
Patrick expressed his dissatisfaction with the shift in record businesses generally, as well as Warner Brothers' in particular, to 'bundle' tickets and record sales in a 2019 band interview with Joe Rogan. The band claims that this method, as well as the record industry's increasing emphasis on streaming numbers and social media profiles, disadvantages artists.
