Paramahansa Yogananda Life

Paramahansa Yogananda (born Mukunda Lal Ghosh; January 5, 1893 – March 7, 1952) was an Indian monk, yogi, and guru who lived in America for 32 years.

He introduced millions of people to meditation and Kriya Yoga through his organization Self-Realization Fellowship (SRF) of India's Self-Realization Fellowship (YSS).

Swami Sri Yukteswar Giri, a Bengali yoga master, was sent by his lineage to spread yoga's teachings to the West in order to demonstrate the integration of Eastern and Western faiths and to preach a harmony between Western material growth and Indian spirituality.

His long-serving presence in the American yoga movement, as well as Los Angeles' yoga culture, led him to be dubbed the "Father of Yoga" in the West by yoga experts. "Yogananda was the first major Indian teacher to settle in the United States and the first influential Indian to be hosted in the White House by President Calvin Coolidge in 1927," the Los Angeles Times said.

On his first arrival in Boston in 1920, he began a transcontinental speaking tour before settling in Los Angeles in 1925.

He earned local fame as well as international recognition for his work: he founded a monastic order, bought properties for his company in several California locales, and welcomed thousands of people into Kriya Yoga for the next two and a half decades.

SRF had over 100 centers in both India and the United States by 1952; now, they have groups in nearly every major American city.

His book "plain living and high thinking" principles attracted people from all walks of his followers; since its first publication, it has sold over four million copies, with HarperSan Francisco naming it as one of the "100 best spiritual books of the twentieth century."

Steve Jobs, the former Apple CEO, had ordered 500 copies of the book for his own memorial so that every visitor could have a copy.

The book has been reprinted on occasion and is regarded as "the book that changed the lives of millions." Awake: The Life of Yogananda, a 2014 documentary, received multiple accolades at film festivals around the world.
