Early life
Grier was born in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, the granddaughter of Gwendolyn Sylvia (née Samuels), a homemaker and nurse, and Clarence Ransom Grier, Jr., Jr., who served as a mechanic and technical sergeant in the US Air Force. She has one sister and one brother. Grier has confirmed that she is of mixed ancestry, including African American, Hispanic, Chinese, Filipino, and Cheyenne. She was born Catholic and later baptized as a Methodist.
The family moved frequently during Grier's childhood due to her father's service work. When she was six years old, they moved to Swindon, South West England, United Kingdom, where her father worked on an airforce base. Myra's account was that hers was one of the few black families in town, though she claimed they had no prejudice or segregation when they weren't born to hate blacks. Rather, they'd been taught to fear Germans... We were never able to get buses to stop for us in the United States, especially in the South, because we couldn't eat in certain restaurants and couldn't use such bathrooms. There were department stores in which my father and I were not even allowed to try on clothing up until 1969.
After two years in England, the family migrated to the United States, eventually settling in Denver, Colorado. Grier also spent part of her upbringing in rural Wyoming, where their ancestors had fled west via the Underground Railroad to escape slavery. Grier attended East High School in Denver and appeared in a variety of stage productions, as well as participating in beauty competitions to raise funds for college tuition at Metropolitan State College.
Personal life
Grier lives on a ranch in Colorado.
Grier has had several celebrity friendships in the media.
Before starting dating, basketball player Ferdinand Lewis (Lew) Alcindor converted to Islam and changed his name to Kareem Abdul-Jabbar; she became a Muslim. Abdul-Jabbar recommended to Grier but gave her an ultimatum to convert to Islam. "I don't promise to you today," he said, "I'm getting married at 2 p.m." "You may have found another wife" after she became Muslim, and she's been waiting for me." Grier's death was postponed, so he was married the next day.
Freddie Prinze, a comedian, appeared in Coffy in 1973. They began dating and considered marriage. Prinze wanted his child but she was hesitant due to his history of depression and heroin use. Since she left him, the two couples stayed in touch. She was one of the few people Prinze met before he died in 1977.
Grier met comedian Richard Pryor during his friendship with Prinze, but they did not know each other until they were both cast in Greased Lightning. She taught Pryor how to read and tried to assist him with his heroin use. He relapsed after six months of sobriety. Grier's book explains how cocaine entered her body during her sexual mingling with Pryor. Grier questioned Pryor about safeguarding her health, but he refused to use a condom. When dating Grier in 1977, Pryor married Deborah McGuire.
Grier was once attached to Jimmie "Big Wheel" Wheeler, a well-known boxing promoter, Soul Train host Don Cornelius, and basketball player Wilt Chamberlain.

Career
Grier was born in Los Angeles, California, where she was hired to work the switchboard at American International Pictures in 1967. (AIP). She is said to have been discovered by director Jack Hill, who starred her in his women-in-prison films The Big Doll House (1971) and The Big Bird Cage (1972). While under AIP's care, she became a staple of early 1970s blaxploitation films, beginning with Jack Hill's Cozy (1973), in which she plays a nurse seeking revenge on drug dealers. In the trailer, her character was portrayed as the "poorest one-chick hit-squad that never made landfall." The film, which contained sexual and violent elements that were typical of the period, was a box-office hit. Grier is thought to have been the first African-American female to headline an action film, as the protagonists of previous blaxploitation films were males. Roger Ebert, a writer, praised the film for its realistic female lead in his review of Coffy. Grier described her as an actress with "beautiful face and astonishing talent" as well as the fact that she had a "physical presence" that was missing from many other attractive actresses.
Grier later appeared in Foxy Brown (1974), Sheba, Baby, and Friday Foster (both 1975). Grier appeared in smaller capacities for many years after the demise of blaxploitation in the 1970s. She developed increasingly larger character roles in the 1980s, including a druggie prostitute in Fort Apache, The Bronx (1981) and a witch in Something Wicked This Way Comes (1983).
Grier appeared in Sam Sheppard's Fool for Love at the Los Angeles Theatre Center in 1985.

She appeared on Miami Vice from 1985 to 1989, appeared on Martin, Night Court, and The Fresh Prince of Bel Air. She appeared on the television show Crime Story from 1986 to 1988. Daniel Petrie, the film's director, was worried about "repercussions from interracial love scenes" in Rocket Gibraltar (1988). She appeared on Sinbad, Preston Chronicles, The Cosby Show, The Wayans Brothers Show, and Mad TV. Grier appeared in Snoop Dogg's video for "Doggy Dogg World" in 1994.
Grier appeared in the late 1990s as a cast member of the Showtime series Linc. She appeared in John Carpenter's Escape from Los Angeles and 1997, a title role in Quentin Tarantino's Jackie Brown's films that partly paid tribute to her 1970s blaxploitation films. She has been nominated for several awards for her role in the Tarantino film. In a scene on Showtime's The L Word, Grier appeared as Kit Porter. The series lasted for six seasons before ending in March 2009. Grier appears in such television series as Law & Order: Special Victims Unit (where she is a recurring character).
Amanda Waller, also known as White Queen, head agent of Checkmate, a clandestine operations company, appeared in a recurring role on the hit science-fiction film Smallville in 2010. In 2011, Larry Crowne appeared as a mentor and mentor to Julia Roberts' college professor.
