Early life
Loretta Devine was born in Houston, Texas, on August 21, 1949. She grew up in Houston's Acres Homes neighborhood, where her mother was a single mother to six children. She was very involved on the pep squad and competed in talent shows at George Washington Carver High School.
Devine received a Bachelor of Arts in Speech and Drama from the University of Houston in 1971. She earned a Master of Fine Arts in Theater from Brandeis University in 1976.
She was welcomed to Alpha Kappa Alpha's Epsilon Lambda chapter.
Career
Devine has appeared on Broadway for a long time. Her Broadway debut in 1978 was A Broadway Musical, which ended after 14 previews and just one performance on December 21, 1978. She attracted attention in her second Broadway performance, Comin' Uptown, starring Gregory Hines.
She rose to fame in Dreamgirls, a smash 1981 Broadway musical loosely based on The Supremes' past, in which she played Lorrell Robinson (a fictional character based on Mary Wilson). During workshops that were held in six-week workshops for three years, Dreamgirls were born, and Jennifer Holliday developed via improv. In 1995 Apollo revival of The Wiz as Glinda the Good Witch of the South, she received raves.
Devine appeared in Jessie Maple's Will, the first independent feature film directed by an African-American woman, rehearsing for Dreamgirls with a young child in 1981. Devine earned $500 for her performance in the low-budget film.
Devine appeared in films including Little Nikita and Stanley & Iris. In the film version of Dreamgirls, she has a cameo appearance.
