Senior Conservatives called the decision to rename the Brecon Beacons National Park "ludicrous" and 'bonkers' attempt to appear 'trendy.' Although the name was dropped in favour of its Welsh counterpart Bannau Brucheiniog pronounced Ban-eye Bruck-ein-iog, or the Bannau for short, park bosses said the link with a wood-burning, carbon-emitting blazing beacon was 'not a good look.' But Tory MP Fay Jones of Brecon and Radnorshire doubted the cost and effect of the'symbolic' rebranding, requesting to know why locals were not consulted. People were encouraged to continue using the Brecon Beacons name and actions'rather than nomenclature,' Downing Street said, and that climate change is the primary issue. Sir Robert Goodwill, a Tory MP, said that place names such as "Coalville" or "Blackburn" could be equally vulnerable under the same reasoning as avoiding links to carbon dioxide emissions. In a video starring actor and activist Michael Sheen, who was born in Newport, South Wales, Owen Sheers wrote about the launch.
