Otto Wanz Career

Professional wrestling career

Wanz made his professional wrestling debut in Nestelbach, Austria, on June 13, 1943. He'll be back in Japan as "Bulldog" Otto, mainly for New Japan Pro-Wrestling (NJPW).

He founded the Catch Wrestling Association (CWA), headquartered in Austria in the early 1970s, but he also promoted shows in the surrounding countries. On August 2, 1977, Wanz defeated Jan Wilkens on a show in Cape Town, South Africa, becoming the first holder of the CWA World Heavyweight Championship, taking the championship back to Europe once the tour was over. On several occasions over the next two years, Wanz defended the championship in Austria and Germany before losing to Don Leo Jonathan in Johannesburg, South Africa, on September 1st. Jonathan Wanz won the championship for the second time in front of a home town crowd. He wrestled Andre the Giant in Germany, becoming one of the few wrestlers to bodyslam him.

He worked for Verne Gagne's American Wrestling Association (AWA), defeating long-serving AWA World Heavyweight Champion Nick Bockwinkel to win the AWA World Heavyweight Championship on August 29, 1982 while in the United States on a 1982 tour. As Bockwinkel regained the championship on October 9, the reign came to an end 41 days later.

Wanz, a retired member of the CWA, served as the champion for many years until 1982, where an American power house wrestler known as Bull Power defeated him for the championship. A few months later, Wanz recovered the crown, but Bull Power reigned 1989. For the fourth time, Wanz won the CWA Championship on June 30, 1990. After the match, Wanz shifted from active competition to promoting the CWA.
