Musical career
Burbridge was born and raised in Washington, D.C., in an African American family with some Egyptian roots. Oteil's name means "explorer" or "wanderer." When his older sibling, Kofi, was gifted for music, their mother encouraged them with classical and jazz classes in the hopes of strengthening their musical talents and keeping them out of trouble. Kofi recalls Oteil's first drum set, a Quaker Oatmeal box, when he was only three to four years old. Both brothers were introduced to a variety of musical styles and evolved into multi-instrumentalists, with both being taught to play the piano. Oteil gained experience on the bass clarinet, violin, and trumpet; however, bass guitar and drums became his instruments of choice (while Kofi acquired a passion for both flute and keyboards). Burbridge was also interested in theater, and he was co-host of "Stuff," a local children's television show. He was enrolled in the Sidwell Friends School, graduating in 1982.
As a youth, Oteil appeared in a variety of D.C. bands, gaining extensive knowledge of R&B, rock, Brazilian music, and jazz among other genres. He went to Virginia Beach and spent most of his time in cover bands before becoming a member of the Atlanta musical scene, where he performed with various artists and later became fluent in other genres of music.
Burbridge, one of Bruce Hampton's original members of the Aquarium Rescue Unit, was introduced to audiences of the jam band scene in the southeast of the United States. Participants of Phish, Phil Lesh and Friends, and Blues Traveler, who enjoyed sitting in with one another in each other's bands, were among those included in the tour. As Hampton left the Aquarium Rescue Unit, it gradually disbanded; however, Burbridge had a reputation on the four-, five-, and eventually the six-string bass guitar, enjoying the more commercial aspects of playing with Atlanta-area musicians. Bruce Hampton, Oteil Burbridge, Jimmy Herring, Jeff Sipe, Matt Mundy, and Count M'Butu were among the band's members during its first years. Despite the fact that the band was never commercially successful, their unique blend of bluegrass, rock, Latin, blues, jazz, and funk (along with their impeccable chops) led to the band's fame and served as a kind of model for future musical endeavors.
