Oliver Riedel (born 11 April 1971) is a German singer best known as the bassist for the German Neue Deutsche Härte band Rammstein.
Early life
Riedel was born in Schwerin on April 11, 1971. He had a positive relationship with both of his parents as he grew up. He attributes the small age difference between their two generations. He was not a good student as a child, but he made his way into school with the help of his mother. Riedel was extremely shy, especially during his teenage years; although his friends celebrated, he'd often be found just "hanging around."
Personal life
Riedel has two children, one a girl named Emma, and is estranged from their mother.
He enjoys photography and sports, especially skateboarding and surfing. In the making of "Keine Lust," he mentions that he wants to go snowboarding while wearing a fat suit. He is Rammstein's tallest citizen, standing in at 6 ft 7 in (2 m). He has also been rumored to be the most computer-literate of the group.
Musical career
Riedel formed the Inchtabokatables, a 1990 folk/punk band formed in 1990. Riedel, Till Lindemann, Richard Kruspe, and Christoph Schneider entered and won the Berlin Senate Metro beat competition, which allowed them to record a four-track demo effectively. Christian "Flake" Lorenz and Paul Landers would later tour the band named Rammstein.
In September 1995, the six released Herzeleid ("Heartache"), their first album. In 1997, the band's second album, Sehnsucht ("Desire"), was released, and it would later become platinum. The album Mutter ("Mother") was released in April 2001 and a European tour followed, ending on July 3, 2002. Rammstein's members were apparently debating whether or not they should continue or not in their current form at this moment. It was decided that they should all take a break and then decide whether or not to continue.
Rammstein began working on their fourth album, which was a turning point in the band's sound and maturity. With the introduction of Reise, Reise ("travel, travel") in September 2004, the band saw their hard work pay off.
Rosenrot ("Rose-Red") was introduced in 2005.
Liebe is for everybody," Rammstein's sixth album, Liebe is for Everyone, was released in October 2009.
Rammstein's untitled seventh album was released in May 2019.
In May 2022, the band's eighth and new album Time ("Time") was released.
