BRIAN VINER: If I compiled my list again today, I still wouldn't have space for The Italian Job, Forrest Gump, The Great Escape, or Titanic, which all of which encouraged readers to write in. By the way, that doesn't mean I don't like or even love those photos (although not Titanic), which makes me wish the iceberg would strike a bit sooner). Here is a list of the Top 20 movies you should have included in my Top 100 list, as well as your reasons for... The Shawshank Redemption (left), Mary Poppins (right), and Saving Private Ryan (inset).

Your country NEEDS You!How millions were sent to fight in WWI and WWII after conscription was introduced - as Army chief issues rallying call to 'mobilise the nation' in face of Russian threat

www.dailymail.co.uk, January 24, 2024
It was a call that struck at all patriotic young men: Your Country Needs You. These words, which accompanied Army chief Lord Kitchener's face on posters all around the country, had helped to encourage one million people to participate in the First World War in January 1915. However, with casualties in their hundreds of thousands, the tide of volunteers was not strong, and so, in January 1916, conscription was introduced amid widespread resistance in some quarters. Some 2.5 million men had been ordered to serve by law by the time the Great War came to an end in 1918. As the government begins to'mobilize the troops' in the event of a wider conflict against Russia in the midst of Ukraine's war. Both men aged between 18 and 41 were called up in 1939, 1939, before unmarried women and widows of the age of 30 were also encouraged to serve in some manner. And although the war against Hitler came to an end in 1945, the National Service, which was based on a different name, was launched in 1947 and continued until 1960. More than: Men enlisted in 1916 (left); new recruits queuing to join conscription in 1939 (top right); National Service recruits in 1953.

One of them is amusing. I've said it, and I don't care who knows it. Because eating alone is one of life's pleasures.

Glenda Jackson, a woman in Love, has died at the age of 87

www.dailymail.co.uk, June 15, 2023
The Women in Love actress, who left her acting career in 1992 to serve in Parliament for more than 20 years, died after a 'brief illness' at her house in Blackheath, south-east London. She returned to television screens in 2019's Elizabeth Is Missing, depicting an elderly woman suffering from the early stages of dementia. The much lauded performance displayed why she had been surrounded by awards during her glittering career. In 1970 romantic drama Women in Love, she received the first of two Academy Awards for 1970 romantic drama Women in Love, in which she appeared alongside Oliver Reed and Alan Bates. The second came after her role in the 1973 British romantic comedy A Touch of Class. She also appeared on Egyptian queen Cleopatra in 1971 for an episode of The Morecambe & Wise Show starring comedian Eric Morecambe and Ernie Wise. Jackson had just finished filming The Great Escaper with fellow Oscar winner Sir Michael Caine, who had last appeared in The Romantic Englishwoman 48 years ago.

Helen Mirren is a magnificent performer but this is a travesty of history

www.dailymail.co.uk, September 9, 2022
SARAH VINE: I missed Helen Mirren's lavish four-part HBO series Catherine The Greatest when it first premiered on YouTube; now it's available on Freeview, it's worth a look. No doubt that it has a lot to do with the fact that we live in such bleak, uninspiring times that we are so devoted to tales of nobility and adventure. The prequel to Game Of Thrones (by all accounts disastrous) Lord Of The Rings prequel The Rings Of Power, Amazon's (by all accounts ineffective) Lord Of The Rings prequel The Rings Of Power... They provide a colorful escape from modern life's constant challenges. Empress of Russia by Mirren is a much more youthful figure in comparison to the other Catherine gracing the airwaves (Elle Fanning in the lavishly bonkers The Greatest), notably more mature both physically and metaphorically. Mirren is in her seventies and playing a woman who was in her forties when the majority of the incident took place - not surprising for male comedians but not unheard of for a woman. So there's something of a quiet triumph for the feminists on display, with Mirren's stunning execution being every bit as seductive as any fresh-faced, firm-fleshed starlet.
