Early career: 2005–2010
Skream's early performances were brutal and sinister works co-produced with Adegbenga Adejumo (Benga), a frequent visitor of Big Apple. They produced two EPs, The Judgment in 2003 and Hydro in 2004.
"Midnight Request Line," one of his first solo singles, has been credited as a key component in the evolution of a more melodic sound in dubstep music. The track was "dubstep's most recognizable crossover hit," according to LA Times' Justin Hampton. Producers as varied as grime producer Wiley and minimalist techno producer Rigo Villalobos have lauded them, as has minimalist techno producer Riley. According to a writer for The Wire, the song has "a dramatic shift in key and tempo that recalls] Derrick May's classicist demeanor."
Jones' music began to shift from the darker, UK garage-influenced sound of early dubstep bands like Horsepower Productions, to more dub and house music as dubstep gained more attention from mainstream media outlets like The Guardian and Pitchfork Media.
Skream has released songs on several British record labels, including Tempa, Tectonic, and Big Apple Records. He has co-produced a number of tracks with Niall Henshaw (aka Spectrum). He has performed in Europe, Canada, Australia, and Japan, as well as the United Kingdom and Japan. Stella Sessions, he hosted a weekly Rinse FM show from 2006 to 2006. Benga appeared on the programme in 2010, which was renamed The Skream and Benga Show.
In 2007, Skream!'s "Angry" and "Colourful" were included in the E4 teen drama Skins, as well as an exclusive mix. This was the first time dubstep was shown on television. Skream appeared on BBC Radio 1's Essential Mix the year before.
Harmless released Watch the Ride, an album mixed by Skream in September 2008. Skream appeared on a fly-on-the-wall German television show Durch die Nacht zusammen... as drum and bass guitarist Goldie. Skream said in this that he currently had writer's block but that he was working on music in other genres, as well as a potential Skream & Goldie collaboration.
Tim Jonze, a music journalist, credited La Roux's hit "In for the Kill" to Skream's remix, "Let's Get Ravey," while writing for The Guardian in 2009.
Skream's second album, Outside the Box, was released in the summer of 2010. The album was rated 7 out of ten by a Spin magazine.
