Octave Maus (16 June 1856, Brussels, Belgium) was a Belgian art critic, writer, and advocate, who died on November 26, 1919, Brussels, Belgium. Maus co-authored and defended Edmond Picard, and the weekly L'Art moderne was founded in 1881 by the two writers and judges. Maus was elected secretary of the newly established Les XX in 1884, and his duties included the organization of annual exhibitions. In 1893, Maus advocated for Les XX's dissolution. He founded La Libre Esthétique in 1894. Poldowski (daughter of Henryk Wieniawski) was a neighbour and lifelong admirer of Maus'. * She dedicated some of her song settings to Maus and his partner Madeleine, as well as her 1923 series of midday recitals at the Hyde Park Hotel in London, which were dubbed The International Concerts of La Libre Esthétique.
