Octave Cremazie Life

Octave Crémazie (April 16, 1827 – January 16, 1879), a French Canadian poet and book dealer, was born in Quebec City.

Crémazie has been dubbed "the father of French Canadian poetry" after being recognized both during and after his lifetime for his patriotic poetry and his significant role in Quebec's cultural growth. "Octave was the youngest of Jacques Crémazie and Marie-Anne Miville's four living children."

He was a student at the Seminary of Quebec, where the priest John Holmes (American priest) introduced him to the French Romantic writers from 1836 to 1844.

Alfred de Musset, Alphonse de Lamartine, and Victor Hugo, in particular, had a major influence on the future poet.

The J. et O. Crémazie bookstore in Quebec City was instrumental in the mass dissemination of Romantic writers' work in the North American region.

Crémazie helped found Institut canadien, a French cultural institute dedicated to the promotion of French Canadian culture, while still in his early twenties.
