Nisargadatta Maharaj Life

Nisargadatta Maharaj, born in 1897 to 1981, was a Hindu guru of nondualism, who belonged to the Inchagiri Sampradaya, a lineage of teachers from the Navnath Sampradaya and Lingayat Shaivism. I Am That, an English translation of his talks in Marathi by Maurice Frydman, gained worldwide fame and followers, especially in North America and Europe.

Early life

In Bombay, Nisargadatta was born on 17 April 1897 to Shivrampant Kambli and Parvati bai. The day was also Hanuman Jayanti, Hanuman's birthday, so the boy was named 'Maruti' after him. His parents were followers of the Varkari sampradaya, an egalitarian Vaishnavite bhakti faith that venerates Vithoba. Shivrampant's father, a Mumbai domestic servant, later became a Kandalgaon petty farmer.

Maruti Shivrampant Kambli was brought up in Kandalgaon, a small village in Maharashtra's Sindhudurga district, with his two brothers, four sisters, and deeply religious parents. Following his elder brother's death, he went to Bombay in 1915 to help his family return home. He started working as a junior clerk at an office but soon opened a small grocery store, mainly selling beedis (leaf-rolled cigarettes), and soon owned a string of eight retail stores. He married Sumatibai in 1924, raising three children and a boy.

Siddharameshwar Maharaj, the leader of the Inchegiri branch of the Navnath Sampradaya, was introduced by his friend Yashwantrao Baagkar in 1933. "You are not what you pretend to be," his guru told him. Siddharameshwar brought him to Inchegiri Sampradaya, giving him meditation-instruction and a mantra, which he immediately began to recite. As he himself recounted later, Siddharameshwar gave Nisargadatta instructions for self-enquiry, which he followed verbatim:

Following his guru's instructions to honed in on the feeling of "I Am," he spent all his spare time investigating himself in silence and remained in that state for the next four years, practicing meditation and singing devotional bhajans.

Siddharmeshwar Maharaj died on November 9, 1936, after an association that lasted just two and a half years. Maharaj left Mumbai in 1937 and travelled throughout India. He returned to his family in Mumbai in 1938 after eight months. On the ride home, his state of mind changed, realizing that "nothing was wrong anymore." He lived in Mumbai for the remainder of his life, owning one shop to make a hefty living.

He suffered two personal losses between 1942 and 1948, first the death of his wife, Sumatibai, and his daughter. After a personal revelation from his guru, Siddharameshwar Maharaj, he began to give initiations in 1951.

Nisargadatta Maharaj continued to welcome and teach visitors in his home, giving lectures twice a day until his death on September 8th, 1981, at the age of 84.
