Career
He was hired as a technical consultant on the 1995 film Hackers, where his job was to speak with the actors and director about computer hacking. "I kept noticing that this guy was something that the actors seemed to really look up to and admire," Jarecki recalled on the set of Hackers. They told me he was the director. "I knew what I wanted to do right away."
Jarecki, 19, graduated from New York University and went on to direct music videos in order to be noticed in the film industry. Since no one expressed an interest in his video services, he decided to talk with his favorite directors to see how they got off. A literary agent introduced by a family friend supported the idea and gave Jarecki a $50,000 advance on his first book, Breaking In: How 20 Film Directors Got Their Start.
Jarecki produced, produced, and edited his first feature film The Stranger, in which he chronicled the 12-day shoot of the dramatic thriller When Will I Be Loved. During August 2007, Showtime bought the film and it premiered on television. The Red Envelope Entertainment brand of Netflix acquired the home video rights. The Stranger has been received well, with 69% on Rotten Tomatoes and generally positive Metacritic reports.
Jarecki began working as an executive producer on the documentary Tyson in 2008. In the same year, he co-wrote with novelist Bret Easton Ellis (whose book the film was based on) and was even planned to direct it at one point.
Jarecki founded Beat Sheet Central, a well-known script writing service. With the 3-minute short film The Weight, he returned to directing and writing in 2009.
Jarecki's first feature film, Arbitrage, debuted at the Sundance Film Festival in January 2012. Richard Gere, Susan Sarandon, Tim Roth, and Brit Marling appear in this film. Lionsgate and Roadside Attractions bought the film and it opened in US theaters in September 2012. Rotten Tomatoes was lauded by critics who received 87%, making it one of the year's best 20 reviewed films. It received a number of accolades, including the National Board of Review for "Top Ten Independent Films" and a Golden Globe Award for its actor Richard Gere's role in "Best Actor – Drama." The film was also a commercial success; although it was produced inexpensively, it earned more than $48 million in international box office and VOD.
Fuel, "a detective story set in Los Angeles in the midst of a futuristic world of electric vehicles and alternative energy," it was announced in October 2012.
Jarecki produced, wrote, and produced the multi-narrative film about the drug epidemic, Crisis, starring Gary Oldman, Luke Evans, Evangeline Lilly, Michelle Rodriguez, Mia Kirshner, Greg Kinnear, and Lily-Rose Depp. Critics and fans have lauded the film, which has been on display on iTunes for nearly two weeks after its debut in the United States and as Australia's most popular debut film. In its first weekend in the United States, the film was also the nation's best independent film in theaters.
