Nicanor Segundo Parra Sandoval (born in 1914 – 2018) was a Chilean poet, mathematician, and physicist.
He was regarded as a leading poet in Chile and Latin America.
Parra referred to himself as a "anti-poet" due to his distaste for traditional poetic pomp and function; after recitations, he would exclaim "Me retracto lo dicho" ("I take back everything I said")).
Life
Parra, the son of a schoolteacher, was born in 1914 in San Fabián de Alico, Chile's north Fabián de Alico. He came from the Parra family's culturally prolific Parra family of actors, musicians, artists, and writers. Violeta Parra, her sister, was a folk singer, as was his brother Roberto Parra Sandoval.
He began teaching mathematics and physics at the University of Chile in 1933, one year after the publication of his first book, Cancionero sin Nombre, was published. He began studying physics at Brown University in the United States in 1943 and began teaching in Chilean secondary schools. He went to Oxford University in 1948 to study cosmology. In 1952, he returned to Chile as a professor at the University of Chile. Parra served as a professor of theoretical physics at the University of Chile from 1952 to 1991, and he taught at Louisiana State University, New York University, and Yale University. He performed his poetry in England, France, Russia, Mexico, Cuba, and the United States. Hundreds of books have been published by him.
Gabriel Mistral and Pablo Neruda promoted him as a young man. When Mistral visited Chillán, he caught her attention. Parra performed the national anthem in her honour as Latin America's first Nobel Laureate; at its conclusion, Parra stormed out and recited a poem he'd written for her the previous night. Mistral, who was on the anthem, stayed standing until Parra was finished, and later introduced him to influential people in Santiago as a poet of future global fame. Neruda arranged for Parra's collection Poemas y Antipoemas to be published in Buenos Aires in 1954.
Poemas y Antipoemas is a classic of Latin American literature, and it is one of the twentieth century's most influential Spanish poetry collections. Allen Ginsberg, an American Beat writer, has referred to it as an inspiration.
In Alejandro Jodorowsky's autobiographical film Endless Poetry (2016), a fictionalized version of Parra appeared.
