Around 125,000 Vietnamese refugees fled to the United States in 1975 after South Vietnam fell to the North Vietnamese forces. Rear Adm. Huan Nguyen, the first Vietnamese-American to hold an admiral's rank, was one of the refugees. Nguyen's rise to be a respected Navy officer was both lengthy and tragic, beginning with one of the Vietnam War's most iconic images, seen below. Despite being fired three times through the arm, thigh, and skull, Huan Nguyen managed to live and escape Vietnam. He eventually joined the Navy as a migrant and advanced through the ranks.
