In 1975, around 125,000 Vietnamese refugees fled to the United States after South Vietnam fell to the North Vietnamese forces. One of those refugees was U.S. Navy Rear Adm. Huan Nguyen, who became the first Vietnamese-American to hold an admiral's rank. Nguyen's journey to becoming a distinguished Navy officer was long and tragic, beginning with one of the Vietnam War's most iconic photos, seen bottom right. Huan Nguyen, managed to survive and escape Vietnam despite being shot three times through the arm, thigh, and skull. Eventually fleeing to the U.S. as a refugee, he eventually joined the Navy and rose up through the ranks.
