Nevers Mumba (born 1960) in Chinsali, northern Zambia, is a Zambian politician and religious minister.
Under Levy Mwanawasa, he served as Vice President of Zambia 2003-04.
Early life and career
In Chinsali, Mumba grew up with his parents and 11 brothers and sisters in a religious environment. Mumba's father, Sunday Mumba, served as a lecturer and pastor at the United Church of Zambia. Rev. John was baptized as a member of the University of Zambia. Paul Mushindo.
Mumba obtained his primary education at Chinsali Basic School. After receiving high marks at his Grade 7 examination, he was selected to attend one of the country's two best schools, Hilcrest Technical High School. While there, he joined the Zambian Combined Cadet Force (ZCCF) and rose to the rank of Provincial Commandant for Southern Province.
He then went to the Zambia National Service for one-year compulsory training. He had aspired to be a complete military man but on the Copperbelt province, he changed his mind and went to work in the mines.
He decided to join the Pentecostal Movement and joined Maranathan Church, where he became a church elder under Bishop Sky Banda at age 19. He left and founded Victory Bible Church and Victory Ministries International in 1980.
He founded the National Christian Coalition, a Christian political party, in 1997. In 1998, it was established as a national party. It ran in the 2001 Zambia general election, where Mumba came 5th out of over 11 candidates.
He served as Zambia's High Commissioner to Canada from 2009 to 2011.
Mumba was elected President of the Movement for Multiparty Democracy (MMD) political party on May 25, 2012, which had been in opposition since its demise in the 2011 presidential election. He defeated Felix Mutati and a number of other candidates.
