Playing career
Emerson grew up playing minor hockey in his hometown of Waterford, Ontario, with the OMHA's Waterford Wildcats. Emerson was selected in the 7th round (92nd overall) of the 1985 OHL Priority Selection by the Guelph Platers after the 1984-85 season with the Stratford Cullitons Jr.B. (OHA) club. Emerson, on the other hand, decided to pursue an NCAA award and spent a second year with the Cullitons before arriving in Ohio at Bowling Green State University (CCHA) in 1986.
Emerson was drafted in the third round, 44th overall, by the St. Louis Blues in 1985.
Emerson made his professional debut with the Peoria Rivermen, the Browns' IHL affiliate, during four seasons, where Emerson was a 3-time finalist for the Hobey Baker Award. He played 36 goals and added 79 assists in his first and only full season with the Rivermen (1990–91).
Emerson played for the Blues from 1991-92 and scored 132 points in his two full seasons with them. He joined the Winnipeg Jets before the 1993-94 season and had his most productive season of his NHL career (33 goals, 41 assists). He spent one more season with the Jets before moving to the Hartford Whalers in 1995–96.
Emerson spent two seasons in Hartford and then joined the franchise as it became the Carolina Hurricanes in the 1997-98 season. Emerson joined the Chicago Blackhawks from 1998-1999. In an trade for Chris Murray, the Blackhawks traded him to the Ottawa Senators later this season.
Emerson debuted with the Atlanta Thrashers in 1999 and 2000 and played 58 games with them. He and Kelly Buchberger were traded to the Los Angeles Kings late in the season in exchange for Donald Audette and Frantisek Kaberle. Following the 2001–02 season, Emerson will continue with the Kings until retiring.
Emerson played in 771 NHL games during his career, scoring 195 goals and adding 293 assists. He has played in 40 Stanley Cup playoff games, scoring seven goals and 15 assists.
Emerson was hired by the Los Angeles Kings as a video and player growth consultant and then promoted to assistant coach/development coordinator on August 4, 2008. He is now the Kings' Director of Player Personnel.
