Murray Bookchin Life

Murray Bookchin, 1921-2006, was an American social theorist, author, orator, historian, and political philosopher.

Bookchin, a pioneer in the ecology movement, invented and refined the theory of social justice and urban planning, both within anarchist, libertarian, and ecological viewpoints.

He wrote two dozen books on topics such as politics, philosophy, history, urban affairs, and ecology.

Our Synthetic Environment (1962), Post-Scarcity Anarchism (1971), The Ecology of Freedom (1982), and Urbanization Without Cities (1987) were among the most significant.

He became dissatisfied with what he saw as a more apolitical "lifestylism" of the new anarchist movement, and formulated his own libertarian socialist ideology called Communalism, which seeks to reconcile Marxist and anarchist thought.

His ideas have influenced social movements since the 1960s, including the New Left, the anti-nuclear campaign, Occupy Wall Street, and, most recently, Rojava's democratic confederalism.

He was a central figure in the American green movement and the Burlington Greens.
