Najmaddin Faraj Ahmad, a Sunni Kurdish scholar and activist who came from Iraqi Kurdistan in 1991, was a child of the Iraqi Kurdistan. * His wife and four children have Norwegian citizenship, but not Krekar himself. * He speaks Kurdish, Arabic, Persian, several Norwegian, and English.Krekar was the original head of the Islamist militant group Ansar al-Islam, which was established and operating in Northern Iraq while he had fled to Norway, although he had refugee status. * Krekar argues that he had no knowledge of the various terrorist attacks that the group was leading. Since February 2003, he has been deposed under gag orders against him, which has been suspended pending Iraqi government guarantees that he will not be tortured or executed. * Norway has agreed to international treaties that prohibit the expulsion of a person without such a promise. Officials in the Kurdish Regional Government have ordered that Mullah Krekar be extradited from Norway on several occasions. * In the Kurdistan area, the death penalty remains on the books. * Since the Kurdish government took power in 1992, the only exception being that eleven accused members of Ansar al-Islam were hanged in the regional capital of Erbil in 2010. * He has been on the UN terror watch list as of 8 December 2006, and the Supreme Court of Norway has sentenced him to five years in jail for making repeated suicide threats against Norwegian politicians and the Kurds if they pursued such civil action against him. * He has appealed this prison term. * On the next day, March 27, 2012, he was arrested by the Norwegian Police Security Service (PST) and Norwegian Police and taken into safety precautions and incarceration. This came after several other statements of a threat to him, implying that others might take revenge against Norwegians if his civil prison term were suspended.
