Life and work

On a train traveling between Mexico and Arizona, Movita, a Mexican immigrant, was born in Nogales, Arizona. In the first film in which the famous pair appeared together, Flying Down to Rio (1933), Movita began her acting career by singing Carioca to Ginger Rogers and Fred Astaire's first dance number. In 1930s American and Spanish language films, Tehanni in Mutiny on the Bounty (1935) with Clark Gable and Franchot Tone appeared exotic women, most notably as a Tahitian girl. In Paradise Island (1937), she appeared as an island girl and later in Girl from Rio (1939) with Warren Hull. Wilfrid Lawson and Michael Rennie appeared in the British thriller Tower of Terror (1941). She appeared in Fort Apache (1948), then starred with Tim Holt in two more westerns: The Mysterious Desperado (1949) and Saddle Legion (1951).

In 1939, Movita married Jack Doyle, an Irish singer, guitarist, and actor. The marriage did not last. She met Marlon Brando in the late 1950s after being seen in a few more minor westerns and a few television parts, shortly after breaking up with Anna Kashfi. They married in 1960 and had two children. In the 1962 revival of the 1935 film in which Movita had starred a Tahitian girl, Tehanni, Brando starred Fletcher Christian. In 1962, Brando married Tarita Teriipaia, his co-star. Castaneda's marriage to Brando was annulled in 1968 after it was discovered that her previous marriage to Doyle was still active. In 1977, Movita appeared as Ana in 17 episodes of Knots Landing, from October 1987 to May 1989.
