The Sackler family name is now inextricably linked to the heroin epidemic that has brought the US into a stalemate. The family [shown left] joined Purdue Pharma, a painkiller that is highly addictive. OxyContin is a prescription drug that can be used in many countries. The introduction of prescription painkillers [shown bottom right] caused an overdose crisis that has killed more than 650,000 people since 1999. The crisis is now largely due to sinister fentanyl [shown in map]. Just a few grains of the drug can kill a veteran drug user, and it is becoming more popular in the illicit drug market, with many people using the drug without even knowing.
