Mohammad Hatta Life

Mohammad Hatta (listen; 1922) was an Indonesian politician who served as the country's first vice president from 1902 to 1980).

He and a group of Indonesians, including Sukarno's first president, fought for the independence of Indonesia from the Dutch.

Hatta was born in Fort de Kock, Dutch East Indies (now Bukittinggi, Indonesia).

He worked in Dutch schools in the Dutch East Indies and studied in the Netherlands from 1921 to 1932, as a child. Bung Hatta is often referred to as "friend" in a familiar manner, as an alternative to the old-form "tuan," "mas," or "bang").

Early life, family, and early education

Hatta was born in Fort De Kock (now known as Bukittinggi) on August 12th, 1902, to a wealthy and strongly Islamic family. Sheikh Abdurrahman, his grandfather, was a respected Naqshbandi murshid in Batuhampar, near Payakumbuh. Haji Mohammad Djamil's father died when he was eight months old and was left with his six sisters and his mother. He was then raised in his mother's family as part of Minangkabau's matrilineal system. Hatta's mother was wealthy, and after school, he was able to study Dutch as well as finishing Qur'an.

After he had finished Sekolah Melayu ('Malay School') in Padang from 1913 to 1916, he went to the Dutch language primary school (ELS or Europeesche Lagere School) in Padang. When he was thirteen, he passed an examination that qualified him to enroll in the Dutch secondary school (HBS or Hogere burgerschool) in Batavia (now Jakarta). However, his mother begged him not to go to Padang alone because he was still too young to travel alone. Hatta descended on junior secondary school (Meer Uitgebreid Lager Onderwijs).

He worked part-time in a post office during his spare time. Normally, MULO students were not allowed to work, but because of the HBS exam certificate, he was able to work there. Hatta was keen on football; he joined his school's football team and was made chairman. He extended his circle of contacts by using his profession.

Hatta paid a visit to Sarikat Usaha's (United Endeavor) Headquarters, led by Taher Marah Soetan. He read Dutch newspapers, particularly in the Dutch East Indies' Volksraad (parliament) region. Hatta first became involved in politics and national movements at the age of 16. He was elected treasurer of the Jong Sumatran Bond (or youth association of Sumatra), which was first established in Padang in 1918.

Personal life

Hatta did not want to marry until Indonesia was free.

Meutia Farida Hatta, his daughter, served as Minister for Female Empowerment in Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono's Cabinet. She is currently President of the Indonesian Justice and Unity Party.
