Miro Heiskanen Career

Playing career

Heiskanen played hockey until the age of 14 in Espoo's youth team. Later, Heiskanen participated in the HIFK's youth program. He played in 30 games during the 2015–16 season and was named with the Yrjö Hakala Award as rookie of the year. He signed a three-year deal extension with the HIFK group on May 30th.

Heiskanen made his professional debut with HIFK in the Liiga during the 2016-17 Liiga season. He was on HIFK's top defensive pairing in 37 games for the full season. Antti Törmänen, the head coach of HIFK, praised him as his team's best defenseman of the season, lauding his ability to make the right decisions every time. Heiskanen was a top candidate in the 2017 NHL Entry Draft by the end of the season, with Göran Stubb of the NHL Central Scout Bureau describing him as "by far the best European defenseman in the draft." Heiskanen was ultimately chosen third overall by the Dallas Stars.

Heiskanen's three-year, entry-level deal with the Stars was completed on July 8, 2017. Heiskanen spent the 2017–18 Liiga season on loan with HIFK.

Heiskanen was added to the Stars' roster to begin the 2018–19 NHL season, and made his debut on October 4th in a 3–0 win over the Arizona Coyotes. Heiskanen scored his first NHL goal in his career on October 25th in a 5–2 victory over the Anaheim Ducks, defeating goaltender John Gibson off a pass from Jason Spezza. Heiskanen became the second-youngest Stars defenseman to score a goal in the franchise's history at 19 years and 99 days. Heiskanen was named as the Stars' lone representative at the 2019 NHL All-Star Game on January 2, 2019, becoming the second rookie in the Stars/North Stars franchise history to be selected to the All-Star Game. At the time of his selection, he was ranked seventh in the league among rookies and second among rookie defensemen with 17 points. Heiskanen was the third defenceman under the age of 20 to score two goals in a playoff game as the Stars qualified for the 2019 Stanley Cup playoffs.

In Game 4 of the Stars' second round playoff series against the Colorado Avalanche, Heiskanen will set a new franchise record for points by a defenseman with 16. Heiskanen ended the playoff season with 26 points in 27 games, the fourth most by any defenseman during a playoff year in league history, after only Paul Leetch in 1985, Brian Leetch in 1994, and Al MacInnis in 1989. In six games, the Stars will ultimately lose to the Tampa Bay Lightning.

Heiskanen began an eight-year, $67.6 million contract with the Stars on July 17th.

Heiskanen gained the gold medal in the IIHF world championship tournament with Team Finland in 2022.

PLAYOFF ROUNDUP: The Panthers are baffled when taking the lead in a 2-0 series

www.dailymail.co.uk, May 5, 2023
Consider the Toronto Maple Leafs as the most complete NHL elite to be completely confounded by the eighth-seeded Florida Panthers. The Panthers defeated the Leafs 3-2 in Toronto on Thursday, giving them a 2-0 series lead in the Eastern Conference semifinals following their first-round upset of the top-seeded Boston Bruins. Sheldon Keefe, the Leafs' head coach, was particularly worried about the Panthers' second-period results, in which the Panthers scored two unanswered goals. 'Disappointing' Keefe said, 'Baffling.' We didn't make those mistakes one time in the last series [first round against Tampa].'
