Millard Mitchell Life

Millard Mitchell (August 14, 1903 – October 13, 1953) was an American character actor with more than 30 feature films and two television appearances. He was born in Havana, Cuba, and appeared in eight films between 1931 and 1936.

After a six-year absence, Mitchell returned to film work in 1942.

He was a good supporting actor from 1942 to 1953. Mitchell received the Golden Globe Award for Best Supporting Actor – Motion Picture, for his role in My Six Convicts (1952).

He is also known for his role as Col.

Rufus Plummer of Billy Wilder's A Foreign Affair (1948), as Gregory Peck's commanding officer in the war drama Twelve O'Clock High (1949), and as the fictional movie mogul R.F.

Simpson in the Rain (1952). Mitchell has appeared on Broadway frequently, often portraying a fast-talking Broadway character.

He appeared in The Great Campaign (1947).Mitchell married Peggy Gould in 1942.

Mitchell and his wife were married in 1953 at the age of 50, at St. John's Hospital in Santa Monica, California, and were laid to rest in Holy Cross Cemetery in Culver City, California.

Maggie Schpak's daughter learned acting and film costuming, designing prop jewelry for shows including Star Trek (starting in 1979) and Babylon 5, as well as police badges for scores of films including NCIS and The X Files.

Personal life

Mitchell was born in Havana, Cuba, to American parents. He married actress Peggy Gould in 1942; the couple had two children, Mary Ellis and Margaret. Maggie Schpak, their daughter, is a well-known Hollywood jewelry designer.

Mitchell died of lung cancer at St. John's Hospital in Santa Monica, California, at the age of 50, and was laid to rest in Holy Cross Cemetery in Culver City, California.
