When Britain's biggest private house, a mega-mansion called Witanhurst on Highgate Hill in north London , went on the market in 2008, it was close to a ruin. The roof was riddled with leaks, the floorboards were warped and cornices embellished with gold leaf were blighted by mould. Given that this 90,000 sq ft property had a total of 65 rooms - including 25 bedrooms - and a ballroom 70ft long and 20ft high, with an elaborate ceiling that takes six months to paint, it amounted to the country's ultimate doer-upper.

DAVID PATRIKARAKOS: Bakhmut is Ukraine's deadliest front of the conflict, making it the most dangerous place on Earth right now. Since November, the war has been raging here: the longest war has erupted. I am embedded in the center of the city with a Ukrainian Special Forces unit, just a few hundred meters from the Russian soldiers who are determined to murder anyone who stands in their way. However, many of these Russians aren't ordinary soldiers. Mercenaries from the notorious private military company the Wagner Group are here, at the center of the Russian offensive. These contracted killers were sold by a Russian oligarch named Yevgeny Prigozhin, a shaven-headed thug who spent nine years in jail for robbery and dishonesty before making a fortune in catering.

Thousands of Russians have been punished - some were banned, others were jailed, and others were fined for describing the attack as a 'war,' and now opposition leaders are calling for Putin to get the same treatment.
