Michael Joseph Poro (May 29, 1955 – March 15, 2015) was an American bass player best known for his appearances with Toto.
He stopped touring in 2007 after being diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). He was Jeff Porcaro and Steve Porcaro's middle brother.
Joe Porro, a jazz drummer, is their father.
Early life
Mike Porcaro is the second of the three Porcaro brothers. The three brothers were taught drums by their father at his drum shop every weekend. Before switching to bass, Jeff said he wasn't the best drummer and that Mike was a better player than him, while Steve later took up piano before moving to California. When the brothers took guitar lessons, Jeff took off the guitar while Jeff gave up after three lessons, and Mike was assigned the bass because the family had only one drum kit and one bass. Mike Porpo was also a member of Baha's Faith. He was of Italian descent.
Career
Poro first started his music career while in high school, one of whom was involved with his brother Jeff Poro and other prospective Toto residents. Poro played session bass for many artists and bands until the Toto original bass player David Hungate was replaced in 1982 shortly after the band finished recording their Toto IV album. Porcho played cello on a track for the album, appeared in the band's videos and performed as a full band member on the international tour in favor of the album. He remained with the band until 2007.
Porcaro, Toto, appeared in numerous sessions in Los Angeles, and Michael Franks toured with him on his first tour. Larry Carlton, Larry Carlton, and Boz Scaggs followed him on tour. He appears in Scaggs' video for the song "JoJo." Peter Iwers, a Flames bass player, said that his bass playing style had been inspired by Porfiro.
