He joined the staff in 1994 as an offensive assistant and quality control coach and continued with the franchise when it became known as the Tennessee Titans in Tennessee, where he spent 14 years as the Tennessee Titans' offensive line coach. Munchak was hired as the Titans' head coach in 2011 but he was fired after the 2013 season, bringing an end to the franchise's 31-year association.
He was the offensive line coach for the Pittsburgh Steelers for five years and now serves as the Denver Broncos' offensive line coach.
Personal life
Alex and Julie, Munchak's husband, Marci, have two children.
College career
Munchak served as an offensive lineman for Penn State from 1978 to1981. During this period, he was a starter for the 1979 and 1981 seasons; however, he missed the 1980 season due to a knee injury. He was drafted eighth overall by the Houston Oilers during his senior year as a second-team All-American.
Playing career
Munchak was selected as the Houston Oilers' first round draft pick (8th overall), making him the first offensive lineman drafted that year. He jumped right into the left guard starting position in his rookie season. He was in that position for 12 years. During that time, he earned nine Pro Bowl nominations, twice first-team All-Pro, seven All-AFC, and six second-team All-Pro picks. In addition, he was selected for the 1980s All-Decade Team. Munchak's 12-year stint with the Houston Oilers was his second longest seasons with them.
Coaching career
Munchak joined the Houston Oilers staff in 1994 as an offensive assistant/quality control coach, just one year after retiring as a player. Munchak was named offensive line coach of the newly relocated Tennessee Oilers in 1997, a position he held for the next 14 seasons. Following Jeff Fisher's resignation as head coach, Munchak was hired as head coach of the Titans on February 7, 2011. This year was his 30th season with the organization. Munchak's third season as head coach produced a record of 7-9. Tommy Smith, the franchise's chief, and general manager Ruston Webster have requested that Munchak replace at least six assistant coaches during the offseason. Munchak disapproved of some of these suggestions and refused to implement any changes in his staff. Munchak was then relieved of his position on January 4, 2014.
Munchak had no affiliation (as a player or coach) with the Oilers/Titans franchise during the 2014 season. Munchak later became the Pittsburgh Steelers' offensive line coach. Munchak yanked Bengals player Reggie Nelson's hair in a 2015 NFL playoff game against the Cincinnati Bengals, resulting in a 15-yard unsportsmanlike conduct penalty. He was later fined $10,000 by the NFL for an incident that was later canceled after it was determined that the incident was accidental.
After being a finalist for the Denver Broncos' head coach, Munchak was hired by the Broncos to be their offensive line coach on January 14, 2019. Munchak was unable to participate in the team's Week 8 game against the Los Angeles Chargers due to COVID-19 rules. The Broncos would trade with Munchak on February 2, 2022.
