Early years
Hughes attended New Bern High School, where he lettered in football, track & field, and basketball. At New Bern, Hughes was quarterback. Hughes, a senior in 2014, passed for 1,263 yards and ten touchdowns as well as rush for 1,355 yards and 22 more touchdowns, guiding his team to an undefeated season and the NCHSAA 4A state championship. He was drafted to the all-state team and competed in the Shrine Bowl of the Carolinas. College career
In 2015, Hughes spent one year at North Carolina. He was suspended along with M. J. Stewart in October 2015 and charged with misdemeanor assault charges from an altercation that had occurred earlier this month. He left the team after the season and went to Garden City Community College, where he spent a year.
Hughes moved to the University of Central Florida (UCF) in 2017 and was voted National Champions by the Colley Matrix poll. In the November 24, 2017, War on the I-84, Hughes made news with his game-sealing 95-yard kickoff return, with Orlando Sentinel writer Shannon Green remarking that the play saved the Knights' undefeated season.
Hughes left UCF after one season, opting to forego his senior year and join the 2018 NFL Draft.
Professional career
Hughes was selected by the Minnesota Vikings in the first round, 30th overall, of the 2018 NFL Draft. Hughes signed a four-year deal with the Vikings on July 19, 2018, according to St. Paul Pioneer Press writer Chris Tomasson, Hughes had agreed to a $9.87 million contract with a signing bonus of $5.256 million. In the Vikings' 24-16 season-opening victory over the San Francisco 49ers, he made a 28-yard interception return for a touchdown on his first appearance in football. Hughes suffered a torn ACL tear in a Week 6 match against the Arizona Cardinals on October 14, 2018, prematurely ending his rookie season.
Hughes was the fourth cornerback on the Vikings' depth chart for the fourth year. Hughes fumbled rookie wide receiver Mecole Hardman on a kickoff return in Week 9 against the Kansas City Chiefs, and the ball was recovered by teammate Holton Hill in the 26–23 loss. With a neck injury, he was put on injured reserve on January 3, 2020. He finished the season with 45 tackles, nine passes defense, two forced fumbles, and an interceptor with 14 games and three starts.
