Miesha Theresa Tate ( MEE-sh?

born August 18, 1986, she is an American mixed martial arts pundit and former mixed martial artist who competed in the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) and is a former UFC Women's Bantamweight champion.

Tate became a wrestler at Franklin Pierce High School in Tacoma, Washington, and she captured a state championship during her senior year in 2005.

She began her mixed martial arts (MMA) career in 2007 and won the Freestyle Cage Fighting Championship in 2009.

Tate gained a following in 2011 after she defeated the Strikeforce Women's Bantamweight Championship.

She has also won a silver medal in the FILA Grappling Championships. Tate has worked on numerous websites and publications, including ESPN The Magazine and Fitness Gurls, outside of MMA.

Tate was announced as a cast member of Fight Valley's 2015 film Fight Valley.

Multiple peers and media outlets have praised her fighting style, which concentrated on wrestling and Brazilian jiu-jitsu.

Dana White, the Ultimate Fighting Championships' chief, has credited Tate's struggle with Ronda Rousey on March 3, 2012 as the key factor in the UFC's final victory in MMA came on March 5, 2016.

Amanda Nunes, the UFC champion at UFC 200, died on July 9, 2016.

After losing by choice to Raquel Pennington at UFC 205.Post-resignation, Tate has expressed an interest in participating in no-gi grappling matches, the first of which was against former MMA competitor Jessica Eye at Submission Underground 2, which Tate defeated in overtime, in November 2016.

Early life

Tate was born in Tacoma, Washington, to Michelle Tate, and Michelle and husband Robert Schmidt raised her. She was a teen at the age of nine in her youth and spent a lot of time with the boys in her neighborhood on playgrounds. Tate wanted to participate in athletics while attending Franklin Pierce High School and eventually preferred amateur wrestling over basketball. From her freshman year to graduation, she wrestled on the boys' team. "I had my butt kicked really hard for the first few weeks." "I had no idea what I was doing, like a fish out of water," Tate recalled in 2011. She competed in the girls' state championship and took the crown in 2005 during her senior year.

When Tate was attending Central Washington University, a friend of her sister encouraged her to attend the mixed martial arts (MMA) club with her. "I went to the gym, and it was really a bunch of wrestlers." Tate: "I fit right in" Tate said.

Tate was initially unsure of competing in MMA, claiming that she "didn't want to get punched." Tate was encouraged to enroll in her first amateur bout in March 2006, a Muay Thai specialist, after seeing her training partners compete in real competition. Tate wrestled Posener to the mat in the first round but did not strike while holding her there, prompting Tate's trainers to alert her. Posener killed Tate in the second round by a knee from inside a clinch. Tate said, "I finally knew what I was supposed to do and accepted the harsh truth" during the 2012 war: "This wasn't a wrestling match...it was a fight." Tate survived a submission attempt and responded by "whaling down punches," while Posener was on her back for the remainder of the round. Despite her ardent desire to continue, Tate's side was forced to call off the match after the second round due to the injury she suffered in the second round. "I get hurt or injured, I fight that much harder." Tate later stated, "I fight that much harder." Before turning pro, she set a 5–1 amateur record in MMA.

Personal life

Tate is a fan of the Seattle Seahawks. Tate attended Central Washington University, where she encountered her ex-boyfriend Bryan Caraway. Tate was credited by Caraway with saving his mother's Chris Caraway's life when she suffered an asthma attack while scuba diving, stopped breathing, and became totally unresponsive in 2014.

She carried a six-year-old girl with a broken arm when hiking in Nevada on September 5, 2016.

Tate revealed on January 1, 2018 that she was in a feud with fellow MMA fighter Johnny Nuez. Amaia Nevaeh Nuez, their daughter, was born on June 4, 2018. Tate revealed on December 25, 2019, she was pregnant with their second child. Daxton Wylder Nuez, their son, was born on June 14, 2020, and she welcomed them on June 14, 2020.

Miesha Tate Career

Mixed martial arts career

Tate made her professional debut in mixed martial arts at the one-night HOOKnSHOOT Women's Grand Prix in November 2007. She defeated Jan Finney by a vote, but Kaitlin Young, the eventual tournament champion, was knocked out later in the night. Tate participated in several small businesses that did not have television television combats in 2008 and 2009, including Jamie Lyn Welsh in CageSport MMA, Jessica Bednark in Freestyle Cage Combat (FCF), and Dora Baptiste in Atlas Fights.

Tate won the FCF Women's Bantamweight Championship by defeating Liz Carreiro at Freestyle Cage Fighting 30 on April 4, 2009. Tate took charge of the fight in the second round after being knocked down in the first round and suspended Carreiro in the third. She defended the title once more, defeating Valerie Coolbaugh by first-round armbar submission at FCF 38 in January 2010.

Tate debuted in Strikeforce, a MMA promotion headquartered in San Jose, California, which televised matches on Showtime and CBS on June 27, 2008. Tate defeated Elaina Maxwell by a unanimous decision at Strikeforce: Melendez vs. Thomson, who was fighting in the 135-pound bantamweight division.

She returned to Strikeforce Challengers: Evangelista vs. Aina on May 15, 2009, after winning the FCF crown in April 2009. Tate had been supposed to face Kim Couture, but Couture pulled him out of the match due to undisclosed circumstances, and Tate was matched up against Sarah Kaufman instead. Tate was defeated by unanimous decision in a competitive tie for the first time that Kaufman had to make a decision.

Tate defeated Zoila Gurgel at Strikeforce Challengers: Johnson vs. Mahe, who stepped away to defend her FCF crown in January 2010. In the second round, Tate defeated the opposition by armbar submission.

Tate was then accepted into a one-night Strikeforce women's tournament in Strikeforce Challengers: Riggs vs. Taylor on August 13, 2010. On the day of the weigh-ins to determine first-round match-ups, Tate defeated Maiju Kujala in the tournament's first round. She advanced to the tournament final after defeating Kujala by a unanimous vote in two rounds. Strikeforce Women's Bantamweight Tournament Champion she defeated Hitomi Akano by unanimous vote in the third round.

On March 5, 2011, Tate was supposed to face Marloes Coenen for the Strikeforce Women's Bantamweight Championship, but she pulled out after suffering a knee injury in preparation. Strikeforce: Fedor vs. Henderson was postponed until July 30, 2011. Tate chuckled in the midst of saying, "I'm going to try to kill her, I really am." I'm going to try to get to a point where the referee is afraid [for] her life and puts an end to the war. That's my aim. Coenenen, a female judge best known for her jiu-jitsu pedigree, had never been accepted in a mixed martial arts competition. Tate defeated Coenenen by submission (arm-triangle choke) to become the next champion in the fourth round.

"I think I'm not in fact quite yet," Tate said following the brawl. I can't believe that I have a belt to take home with me. In the last couple rounds, I really had to dig deep. I had a rough start to my training camp, but I guess I went out there and did what I needed to do and I was crowned world champion."

Tate's first title defense was supposed to be against former adversary Sarah Kaufman. Ronda Rousey, a new Strikeforce fighter, however, has offered to confront Kaufman for the top-contender position, aiming for a championship shot against Tate specifically. "I want to wrestle Miesha Tate in a title fight." Rousey said, "I don't want to put a bet on her losing."

Rousey later revealed that she felt a title fight between herself and Tate would gain a lot of notice. Rousey would be Tate's first adversary, according to Strikeforce officials.

In the months leading up to it, Rousey predicted that her battle against Tate had been heavily publicized. Rousey made her MMA debut in early 2011 and stunned all four of her opponents by first-round armbar submission. Tate, on the other hand, did not believe that Rousey had earned a championship shot, and argued that Rousey was largely gaining the opportunity due to being "pretty." Rousey said she was "bored" during Tate's victory over Coenen, and the two engaged in a slew of trash-talk, with Rousey describing it as "bored" while watching Tate's victory over Coenen. Tate and Rousey headlined a Strikeforce exhibition on March 3, 2012. This was the first time a woman was allowed to participate in an MMA card's main event. Jimmy Lennon, Jr., Jr., televised the fight on Showtime and introduced him. Tate survived Rousey's first armbar assault and retaliated with strikes shortly after the war began. Tate lost the title after a back-and-forth session of grappling when Rousey won a second armbar near the end of the first round, requiring her to submit.

Tate was chastised by the media for preventing the armbar for several seconds. "Miesha impressed me, she's a tough chick because it hurts," Rousey later said. My elbow has been dislocated before, and that is no fun. Even if it's dislocated if they don't tap, keep going."

On August 18, 2012, Tate met Julie Kedzie at Strikeforce: Rousey vs. Kaufman. Tate was knocked twice during a striker-versus-grappler match. In the third round, she subpoenaed Kedzie with a fight-ending armbar.

Tate joined the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) in February 2013, following Strikeforce's fold. Dana White, the company's president, credited her battle against Ronda Rousey for bringing women's MMA to the forefront. UFC has revealed that she will face Cat Zingano in The Ultimate Fighter 17 Finale on April 13.

Tate said, "Becoming a champion means more to me than anything"—more than a rematch, more than anything." Those are things that I can remember when I'm 80 years old and grandkids are involved.' "Look, this is what I did." This is my achievement.' So, that's my ultimate aim."

Tate vs. Zingano will face Rousey, the inaugural UFC Women's Bantamweight Champion, due to Strikeforce and the UFC being owned by the same entity, prior to the fight. On the 18th edition of The Ultimate Fighter, a UFC reality show, it was also announced that the winner will coach against Rousey.

Tate lost in the final round by TKO despite winning the first two rounds. Tate argued that the suspension was premature. Both women were awarded a Fight of the Night award for their back-and-forth mission. Zingano had been suspended as Rousey's critic and opposition coach after suffering a knee injury that necessisted surgery, and Tate had been replaced by Tate on May 28.

Rousey expressed admiration for Tate's combat skills ahead of their rematch and expressed admiration for their adversary. Tate said, "We have our specific disagreements, but I give her credit for what she's accomplished and where she's gotten involved in the sport of women's MMA." I don't believe we'd be as far away without her, but I do value it."

On December 28, 2013, the rematch took place at UFC 168. The battle was largely one-sided, in Rousey's favour, although Tate did manage to keep Rousey out of the first round and then compelled the audience to cheer for her until the end of round 2. Tate lost to an armbar in the third round after surviving two submission attempts.

On April 19, 2014, Tate faced Liz Carmouche in a co-main event at UFC on Fox: Werdum vs. Browne. She won by unanimous decision, marking her first victory in the UFC. Rin Nakai, the nay promotion, was then defeated at UFC Fight Night: Hunt vs. Nelson on September 20, 2014. She fought in the UFC by unanimous decision, beating Tate 2–2 in the UFC.

On January 31, 2015, Tate faced Sara McMann at UFC 183. Tate shocked many in the MMA community by defeating McMann, an Olympic medalist in wrestling, for the majority of round 3, winning the fight by majority decision (29–28, 29–27, and 28–28). Tate's third UFC victory, FoxSports.com announced that Tate had "proven to be the world's best fighter at 135 pounds less than the champion."

Tate would face Jessica Eye in a fight on July 25, 2015 at UFC on Fox: Dillashaw vs. Baro 2. Tate remarked that she wanted "the best Jessica Eye that anyone has ever seen" and branded Eye a stifling challenge, despite the fact that the fight was initially described as a top-contender match. Tate was the winner of the competition by a unanimous vote.

Holly Holm defeated Rousey for the UFC Bantamweight Championship on November 14, 2015. On March 5, 2016, the UFC revealed that Tate will be the first title defense for Holm at UFC 196. Tate defeated Holm by a technical foul in the fifth round to become the new UFC Bantamweight Champion after a back-and-forth four rounds that saw both fighters displaying an advantage. Tate also received her first Performance of the Night bonus award for her win.

Following Tate's victory over Holm, UFC president Dana White quickly revealed that Tate's first title defense will be against Ronda Rousey in a yet-to-be-determined match later in 2016. However, White announced on April 6, 2016 that Tate will face Amanda Nunes in his first title defense at UFC 200. Nunes thrashed Tate with several straight strikes and finished her with a rear-naked choke three minutes into the first round.

On November 12, 2016, Tate defeated Raquel Pennington at UFC 205. Tate said she planned to take a break from MMA after the match, a month before. Jessica Eye rematch at a Submission Underground show on December 11, 2016. Tate announced her retirement from mixed martial arts after losing to Pennington on a unanimous decision. "I adore you all so much, I've been doing this for more than a decade." "I love this sport forever, but it isn't my time anymore," she said after the fight.

Tate announced on November 7, 2018, that he was Vice President of ONE Championship. In 2021, she left the industry to return to MMA.

Tate announced on March 24, 2021, she would return to fight in MMA against Marion Reneau on July 17, 2021, at UFC on ESPN: Makhachev vs. Moisés. She gained the fight via TKO in the third round. This win earned her her her second Performance of the Night award in her UFC career.

At UFC Fight Night 195, Tate was supposed to face Ketlen Vieira on October 16, 2021. However, the match was called off from the card on September 22, but Tate confirmed it was positive for COVID-19. On November 20, 2021, a fight was rebooked at UFC Fight Night 198. She was disqualified by a unanimous vote in the fight.

On May 14, 2022, Tate was supposed to face Lauren Murphy in a flyweight match at UFC on ESPN 36. However, the match was postponed to UFC 276 due to unidentified reasons. Murphy dropped out a week before the event because she had tested positive for COVID-19. The brawl was then postponed and concluded on July 16, 2022, at UFC on ABC 3. Tate lost the fight on unanimous decision.
