Career
McManus and thousands of other young singers from around the United Kingdom auditioned for the second season of Pop Idol in early 2003. Pete Waterman, in particular, was unsure if she'd be able to work in the music industry due to her fuller figure appearance. However, she was Simon Cowell's favorite, and the public voted McManus into the top 12 in the semi-finals, though the bookmaker's rank-outsider advanced to the finals. McManus was in the bottom 3 only once in the finals, and she was named the winner of Pop Idol on December 20, 2003.
Judge Pete Waterman screamed off the Pop Idol set in protest when McManus won the competition; he later described her as "rubbish." Louis Walsh, a judge on sister show Popstars: The Rivals, was befuddled by McManus' victory and complained that "we need to give her her 15 minutes [of fame]."
Fiona Shepherd, a Scotsman reporter, said of the win: "McManus' victory was not a triumph of talent over image," the Scotsman reporter said of the win: "McManus' win was not a triumph of talent over appearance - the exact opposite, in fact. "If she had been a modelesque actress with an unremarkable voice, the voting public would not have cared." In the Sunday Mercury, George Tyndale expressed similar feelings, saying that McManus was voted out of office due to the "fat vote." "The harm this has done is incalculable," she said about her professed content with her body as well as her ascension to fame. Lives may, in fact, be in jeopardy."
McManus' win "insightably decreased the pool of talent available to the judges," according to Daily Telegraph journalist Viktoria Tolstoy. An Entertainment.ie reviewer called McManus the youngest winner of the Pop Idol series, and she said she and fellow reality television music competition winners Will Young and Alex Parks "look like worldbeaters by comparison."
McManus was signed to the Sony BMG record label, and under the single name Michelle, her debut single "All This Time" was released in late 2003 and early 2004. McManus is the first Scottish female to debut at the top of the UK Singles Chart. The song debuted at number 5 in Ireland before soaring to number 2. The British Phonographic Industry awarded it a gold medal for sales of over 100,000 in the United Kingdom. The album's title track was released as the second single on the UK chart and Number 29 in Ireland, but it stalled at number 16 on the UK chart and Number 29 in Ireland, while the Scottish Singles Chart ranked number seven.
