Early life
Roux was born in Pembury, Kent, but his father Albert Roux was working for horse race trainer Major Peter Cazalet.
Personal life
Roux is married to Giselle, who has worked in restaurant industry for many years and is the secretary of Le Gavroche. Emily, the couple's daughter who also works as a cook, is one of them. The Roux family lives in London.
Roux is a rugby fan and an honorary member of Harlequins and attends the majority of games. He also likes Manchester United and Wigan Warriors and is a keen marathon runner, having run the London marathon 12 times to raise money for the Children's charity Visually Impaired Children Taking Action.
Career
He joined his uncle at the Waterside Inn in Bray, Berkshire, in 1985, before starting with his father at Le Gavroche in April of the same year. He spent three years in and with the Roux brothers catering business before returning to Le Gavroche in 1990, the year the two brothers separated their company on family lines. Michel Jr. took over the world-famous restaurant when his father died in 1993.
Since 2003, he has been a food consultant for the Walbrook club but also works with Restaurant Associates, a luxury dining company. Roux has written several books, including Le Gavroche Cookbook; The Marathon Chef; and Matching Food and Wine, which was named the best book on matching wine and food at the Gourmand World Cookbook Awards.
Roux has appeared on television shows, including on his friend Gordon Ramsay's ITV produced Hell's Kitchen, and as an expert judge on BBC Two's MasterChef: The Professionals (2008–2013). He appeared on Masterchef South Africa as a guest judge in 2012. Roux co-presented BBC Two's Food and Drink from 2013 to 2014 alongside Kate Goodman. In 2013, he appeared as one of the mentors in the series The Chef's Profession.
Roux revealed in March 2014 that he was leaving the BBC due to a rift over his brand ambassadorship for Albert Bartlett Rooster potatoes. Roux returned to television in 2015 and starred First Class Chefs for the Disney Channel and Kitchen Impossible with Michel Roux Jr for Channel 4.
Roux stepped in as host on BBC's Saturday Kitchen after James Martin's departure, who left after ten years, in April 2016. Roux has ruled out the possibility of being a full-time host.
